Steinhaus Caps Off Furious Rally, To Help Baseball Stun Occidental

The River Otters scored seven runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Junior Eli Steinhaus capped off a seven-run top of the ninth inning with a go-ahead grand slam, to lead Lewis & Clark College baseball past host Occidental College 13-10.Ā
Ā
THE BASICSĀ
Ā
Lewis & Clark 13, Occidental 10
(Lewis & Clark 2-2)
(Occidental 4-2)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
The River Otters scored all seven runs in the ninth inning with two down to erase a four-run deficit and finish off their opening weekend with a 2-2 record. Lewis & Clark used five hits, two walks and a hit by pitch, to match their most runs scored in a single-game this season in just one inning.Ā
Ā
Junior Bret Potter started the rally with a one-out single and senior Joaquin Sandoval walked to put two on. Sophomore Evan Carrubba-Rice singled to load the bases before an Occidental reliever recorded a strikeout for the second out. Junior Evyn Lewis opened the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to left-center. Junior Connor Broschard followed with a run-scoring hit by pitch and first year Trent Amoroso made it 10-9 with a walk. Steinhaus followed with a grand slam over the center-field fence to send the Lewis & Clark fans into a frenzy.Ā
Ā
In the bottom of the inning, Potter took the mound and worked around a one-out single for his second save of the season.Ā
Ā
Steinhaus finished the game 1-6 with two runs, four RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Junior Michael Aikawa and Potter led the team with two hits apiece. Aikawa went 2-5 with a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Potter chipped in two hits in six at-bats, a run scored and a walk. Sandoval posted two runs, two RBI, two walks and his first home run of the season. Broschard and Amoroso each notched a hit, two runs, an RBI and multiple walks.Ā
Ā
Sophomore Dillon Foster made his first appearance of the season and second career start. Foster went five innings and allowed three hits, three walks and three runs (one earned). The sophomore struck out five batters.Ā
Ā
Broschard earned the win in relief after allowing one hit, two walks and two runs (one earned) in an inning of work. Potter struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark got off to a strong start in the third and final game of the series. Sandoval hit the first of the team's three home runs with a lead-off shot to left field to start the second.Ā
Ā
The River Otters tacked on a second run in the third. Aikawa led off with a walk, took second on a groundout and raced home on a two-out, RBI double by junior Gavin Mangano.Ā
Ā
After Occidental briefly took a 3-2 lead in the fifth, Lewis & Clark tied the game in the top of the sixth. With two down and Steinhaus on second, Aikawa and Potter worked back-to-back walks and Sandoval was hit by a pitch that scored Steinhaus.Ā
Ā
The hosts retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth (5-3), only for Lewis & Clark to immediately answer. Senior Ryan Sanderson hit his second home run in as many days and of his career, with a one-out solo shot to left-center. Broschard followed with a single and came in to score when the Tigers committed an error on an Amoroso ground ball. Aikawa made it 6-5 Lewis & Clark with an RBI single to left field.Ā
Ā
The Tigers jumped back in front with a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. They added two more, two-out runs on a Nicholas Gonzales two-run single in the eighth.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark sent 11 batters to the plate in the ninth inning to secure their second win of the season.Ā Ā
