PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's tennis team fell to the Whitworth Pirates 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in the L&C Tennis Dome.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in the NWC. The Pirates improve to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
Sophomore Claudia Lew picked up her third straight conference win as the Pioneers No. 1 singles player, defeating Saryn Mooney 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Paloma Vizcaino picked up the only other Pioneer singles point, defeating Ashley Winslow after taking her to a third set tie-breaker. Vizcaino won the opening set 6-3, before falling 6-2 in the second. The Pios No. 6 bounced back to take her match with a 1-0 (10-8) win in the third set.
Vizcaino and Olivia Sweetman earned the Pioneers only doubles point, playing as the No. 3. The duo took down Anabelle Burns and Hannah Wallin 8-4.
Sweetman played as the No. 2 in singles falling 6-2, 6-1, while Makena McCluskey fell 6-1, 7-5 as the No. 3. Playing in the No. 4 position Theresa Grigsby fell 6-2, 6-0 and Allison Schneider dropped both her sets 6-3 in the No. 5 spot.
Leew and McCluskey fell 8-4 as the Pios No. 1 doubles team, while Schneider and Grigsby lost 8-1 in the No. 2 spot.
Lewis & Clark hosts Whitman on Sunday, March 2 at 10 a.m.
