PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's tennis team opened Northwest Conference action on Friday afternoon against the George Fox Bruins. The Bruins edged out the Pioneers to earn the 5-4 win.
Lewis & Clark earned two of its points in doubles action with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Claudia Lew and Makena McCluskey teamed up to take down Alyssa Emoto and Chantelle Hadeed 8-6 at the top spot. Playing as the No. 2 team, Olivia Sweetman and Gillian Lowe defeated Taylor Barnes and Krista Rey 9-7. The Bruins No. 3 doubles team kept the Pioneers from the sweep with an 8-3 win.
Lew also played as the Pios No. 1 in singles, took Emoto down 6-1, 7-5. Sweetman earned the teams final point in the No. 2 spot, battling Hadeed through three sets for the 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win. George Fox rallied down the rest of the order, eanring points from their No. 3, 4, 5 and 6. Lowe fell 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 3 spot, while McCluskey fought hard against Rey at the No. 4 before slipping 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Allison Schneider fell 6-2 in both of her sets from the No. 5, while Theresa Grigsby fell by the same margin at the No. 6.
Lewis & Clark returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. at Pacific Lutheran.
