FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark men's basketball team remains in fourth place in the Northwest Conference standings after defeating the Pacific Boxers 72-66 on Saturday night.
The win moves the Pios to 15-7 overall and 8-5 in conference play. The Boxers fall to 14-10 on the season and 7-7 in conference. With a Pio win and a George Fox loss, the Pioneers are now in fourth place in conference all alone.
Sophomore Serg Ovchinnikov led the Pioneers with a team-high 14 points, while Kurt Parker knocked down 13 and Connor Freeberg 12. Randall Jackson also finished in double figures with 10 points to cap off a well rounded gmae by the Pios. Freeberg led the Pioneers with eight rebounds. Justin Leathers collected six boards, while Quentin Sims had five.
Daniel Zitani led all players with a game-high 30 points for the Boxers, while teammate Mitch Wettig ended the night with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Freeberg got things going with a jumper seconds into the game. The two sides would go onto tie the game up four times before the Boxers hit their stride, pulling ahead for the remainder of the half.
Trailing 30-26 at halftime, Sims tied the contest at 34 all with 17:00 remaining in the game after hitting a three-pointer assisted by Freeberg. The Pioneers took the lead for good at the 14:02 mark courtesy of a Cannen Roberson layup. Parker earned the Pioneers their largest lead of the game with 4:22 to go with an unassisted layup, making it a 61-52 game. The Boxers managed to pull within six points a couple times down the stretch, but no closer falling 72-66.
The Pioneers and Bruins face off on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. in Newberg.
