Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark men's basketball team celebrated the end of 2014 with an 81-70 win over Portland Bible on Tuesday night in the Pamplin Sports Center.
The win improves the Pioneers to 5-4 on the season. Portalnd Bible, who knocked off four other Northwest Conference teams, falls to 5-14 overall.
Junior Carl Appleton paced the way for the Pioneers with the games only double-double. Appleton finished with a team-high 20 points, while collecting a game-high 12 rebounds. The junior forward finished the night 6-of-8 from the free-throw line, while hitting 7-of-12 from the floor. Bradley Carter netted 15 points in the win, Cannen Roberson scored 12 and Serg Ovchinnikov knocked down 10 points.
Mozeek Waggener led all players with 26 points for the Wildcats, while Miles Waggener scored 13 off the bench.
Portland Bibles only lead of the game came at the 17:28 mark in the first half when Raymon Taylor made it a 5-4 contest. Lewis & Clark quickly retook the lead on a quick layup by Roberson eight seconds later. The Pioneers continued to put the ball through the net, taking their first double-digit lead with 4:15 to go on a Justin Leathers three-pointer. Roberson's jumper at the 2:31 mark handed the Pioneers their largest lead of the contest at 41-24. Appleton ended the first half with a layup, sending Lewis & Clark into the intermission with a 46-29 advantage.
Portland Bible team came out of the half strong, cutting the deficit to 52-46 with 13:17 remaining. Despite the Wildcats efforts, the Pioneers never let them any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Pioneers ring in the New Year with Northwest Conference action, hosting Whitman at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2.
