Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior Serg Ovchinnikov netted a game-high 17 points for the Lewis & Clark men's basketball team on Monday afternoon as the Pioneers headed across town to take on Division I member University of Portland.
The Pioneers fall to 4-4 on the season, while the Pilots improve to 9-3 overall.
Ovchinnikov scored 12 of his 17 from behind the three-point arch, while hitting 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Cannen Roberson, Jason Luhnow and LaDarrell Mongkholtham each scored five for the Pioneers. Carl Appleton led the Pioneers with five rebounds, all of which came on the defensive side of the ball. Luhnow picked up a game-high four steals, while Roberson took the ball away from the Pilots twice.
Thomas Van Der Mars scored a team-high 16 points for Portland, while collecting a game-high nine boards. Bobby Sharp scored 12 for the Pilots while Alex Wintering netted 10.
Ovchinnikov hit back-to-back threes to give the Pioneers an early 6-2 lead, but the Pilots would respond with a 22-5 run to push the margin to double digits. Alex Jones nailed a buzzer beating jumper from the baseline to cut the Pios deficit to 38-24 at the break.
The Pilots continued to pile it on at the start of the second half, pulling away with the victory.
The Pioneers return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. when they host Portland Bible.
