McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Coming off a season-high 21 points against George Fox, senior Connor Freeberg nearly did the same thing on Sunday against Linfield, knocking down a game-high 20 points as he helped guide the Lewis & Clark men's basketball team to a dominant 70-57 win over Linfield in Northwest Conference action.
The Pioneers improve to 10-3 on the season and 3-1 in Northwest Conference action. Linfield is still in search of its first conference win, slipping to 0-4, while falling to 2-11 overall.
Freeberg scored eight of his 20 points from the free-throw line, while draining 6-of-10 from the floor. Sophomore Serg Ovchinnikov knocked down 12 points in the win, while senior Quentin Sims scored 10. Sims, along with Justin Leathers, finished the night with a game-high nine rebounds.
Ryan Potter and Adam Myren each finished with a team-high 13 points for the Wildcats, while Myren pulled down a team-high six boards.
Linfield managed to hold the lead in the opening 10 minutes of the first half, but Lewis & Clark found a way back into the contest, grabbing a 17-16 lead on a Sims three pointer with 8:41 to go. The Pioneers continued to build a strong lead over the final minutes of the first period, capturing their largest lead on an Ovchinnikov three with 43 seconds until halftime.
The second half was all Pioneers with the Wildcats only getting within nine points a handful of times. Ovchinnikov gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the game, 69-54, with 3:53 to go with another three pointer. Randall Jackson scored the final basket of the game with 2:33 left to play with a made free-throw after being fouled by Myren.
The Pioneers return to the court on Friday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. as they host Pacific.
