PORTLAND, Ore. - Women's tennis continues to roll in the face of great competition. The youthful Pioneers continued their stellar season with a 7-2 win over the Linfield Wildcats. A team that has battled injuries all year, the defending conference champions visited the LC Tennis dome with their full arsenal of weapons.
Doubles action went the Pios' way early, with a pair of solid wins at number one and two doubles. Aurora Garrison and Gillian Lowe cruised to an 8-2 win over Caroline Brigham and Kwynn Ecton. Continuing their undefeated doubles season, Olivia Cornell and Claudia Lew handled Lexi Thomas and Gretchen Jernstedt 8-4. Keeping the Pioneers from the sweep, Kaila Nip and Kelly Watanabe kept the Wildcats in the match with a solid 8-5 victory over Izzy Borris and Lisa Osepyan.
Switching over to singles action, the battle between the two sides would continue. Three matches would go into a deciding third set. The Pioneers jumped on the board quick, notching a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory with Lowe winning over Ecton. Garrison would follow with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Brigham that featured long baseline duels. Big hitters, Cornell and Thomas would battle into a third set that eventually saw the Pioneer come out on top, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the dual for the Pioneers. Lew, a little bit under the weather, dropped a highly competitive match to Nip at number three singles by the score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. The Pioneers would tally a couple more wins in close matches at number five and six singles. Osepyan won 6-3, 7-5 over Watanabe and Borris outlasted Jernstedt 3-6, 6-0, 11-9.
The Pioneers take on California Lutheran University Saturday at Noon.
