BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark football team scored 41 consecutive points to take down the Macalester Scots 41-17 at Griswold Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Pioneers to 3-0 on the season and hands the Scots (3-1) their first loss of the year.

The game started out in the Scots favor, with Macalester getting on the board in the first quarter on a carry by T. Joe Loiselle. They made it a 10-0 game early in the second quarter with an Auburn Jimenez field goal.

Lewis & Clark's offense finally got started in the final five minutes of the second quarter with the team marching down two-thirds of the field for their first score of the contest. Starting on his own 27-yard line, Keith Welch completed three consecutive passes to sophomore Jacob Costantino to put the Pioneers in Scot territory. Quickly snapping the ball with the no huddle the Pioneers ended up in the end zone six plays later with Welch hanging onto the ball for a one-yard leap over the defense.

The Pio defense went to work on the next possession forcing Macalester to punt after three plays. Regaining control of the ball on their own 45-yard line it took the Pioneers no time to find the end zone again with Evan Stanbro taking the ball 38-yards for his first touchdown of the day.

The third quarter was all Pioneers with the Pios scoring on every possession they had and forcing the Scots to punt on each of theirs.

Sophomore Curtis Shirey ran the ball in for the Pioneers first score of the quarter, followed shortly after by a two-yard rushing touchdown by Welch to put Lewis & Clark ahead 27-10.

Nico Ohland made it a 34-10 game on the team's final possession of the quarter after collecting a pass for a 25-yard touchdown run.

The Lewis & Clark defense was responsible for the team's final score of the game with Josh Cena intercepting Clark Bledsoe on the Pioneers 44-yard line. Cena picked off the senior quarterback and ran the ball 56-yards for his first touchdown the year. The pick is Cena's third of the season after having two last week against Pomona-Pitzer.

Macalester capped off the scoring with an 11-yard score by C.J. Smith.

Welch threw for 312 yards, completing 24 of his 35 passes, which included two touchdown passes. Welch also ended with two rushing touchdowns and Shirey finished with 82 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Stanbro led the receivers with 112 yards on five catches, while Ohland picked up 68 yards and Constantino 67 yards.

John Berokoff and Jon Bielawicz each finished with seven tackles for the Pioneers. Berokoff led the team with two sacks, while forcing a fumble. Tate Sellers also picked up a sack, while Zach Faza and Patrick Jackson each took down the Scot quarterback.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. as they travel to Tacoma, Wash., to face the Puget Sound Loggers in Northwest Conference action.
