BOX SCORE

TACOMA, Wash. – The Lewis & Clark baseball team won the final game of its Northwest Conference series with Puget Sound on Sunday, taking down the Loggers 13-10.

The Loggers got things going first with a strong five run first inning. With the first three batters on base, Will Mentor singled to center, allowing the first two UPS runs to score. A three-run homerun by Kaulana Smith brought in the final runs of the inning.

The Pioneers responded in the top of the second with a five run inning of their own. The Pios managed to have their first five batters all reach base, ultimately becoming their first five runs of the contest. With the bases loaded, Hayden Higger brought in the first run after being hit by a pitch. Junior Geoff Wertz singled to drive in another Pio run, while a sacrifice by Eric Hyun brought in another. Lewis & Clark managed to squeeze in another run on an RBI groundout, followed by a Michael Ball single.

Ball earned the Pios their first lead of the contest in the fourth with his second RBI single of the day. The Loggers helped the Pioneers out in the fifth inning with an error that led to four more Pio runs. With two outs and runners at first and second, Wertz tripled to left field bring in two of the four runs of the inning. Hyun quickly knocked in Wertz, while Kris Brown scored Hyun moments later.

Ball and Nick Lavin extended the Pioneer lead to 12-5 in the seventh with back-to-back RBI singles.

The Loggers were able to get things going again in the seventh inning with five more runs coming in to pull them within two runs.

Ahead 12-10, the Pioneers added an insurance run in the ninth on a bases loaded walk to Corey Davis that allowed Lavin to casually come home.
