PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshman Andrew Traver hit his first career grand slam on Sunday afternoon in game three of the Lewis & Clark baseball teams series against Northwest Conference foe George Fox. The Pioneers defeated the Bruins 8-3 to capture their first win of the 2012 season.
The win puts the Pioneers 1-13 on the season and 1-5 in conference action. The Bruins fall to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the NWC.
Traver finished 3-for-4 from the plate, hitting two monster home runs for the Pioneers. Senior Michael Ball picked up his first win of the season, pitching the complete game, striking out six of the 37 batters he faced.
Ball helped his own cause in the bottom of the first inning, knocking in leadoff batter Geoff Wertz for the first score of the game. Corey Davis came around to score later in the inning after Mike Kinkenon singled to center.
The Bruins pulled within a run in the top of the second with a RBI single from Zac Israel.
In the Pioneers half of the third, Ball reached base on a hard hit single to the Bruin second baseman. George Fox then walked Davis, before Kinkenon loaded the bases with a single through the right side. With the bases juiced, Traver stepped up hitting his first career grand slam. The freshman from San Rafael, Calif. nailed the ball well over the tall fence that the Pioneers have in right field.
Down 6-1, the Bruins put another run on the board in the sixth inning with the leadoff batter coming in to score on a RBI single to left.
Traver ended the scoring for the Pioneers in the sixth inning with his second homerun of the day. The homerun also brought in Kinkenon who reached on an error by the Bruins.
George Fox managed to post one more run in the ninth inning on a solo homerun.
