Football Remains Undefeated After Back and Forth Battle With Pomona in 48-39 Victory

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Lewis & Clark football team opens the 2011 season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 1996 with its 48-39 victory over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday afternoon.

Lewis & Clark is now 3-5 all-time against Pomona, earning wins in the its last two meetings against the Sagehens.

Pomona gave the home fans something to cheer for with the first score of the first half on a Peter Ferrin reception. The Pioneers responded a minute later with a touchdown of their own, with senior Brandis Piper collecting a 35-yard pass from sophomore Keith Welch to tie the contest at seven all.

Luke Sweeney gave the lead back to Pomona after an 11-yard run. The Sagehen kicker would not be able to convert his PAT, making the score 13-7.

Welch closed out the first quarter with a quarterback keep that saw him make his way into the end zone, after a seven play, 50-yard drive.

The Pioneers took extended their lead five minutes into the second quarter with a 36-yard reception by freshman Curtis Shirey. Pomona pulled within a point with a touchdown later in the quarter with another Ferrin reception.

Just two minutes later, Welch found Andrew Frisina down field for a 24-yard touchdown. Sophomore Simon Monley followed the touchdown with his fourth PAT to put the Pioneers ahead 28-20.

Senior Joevonte Mayes opened the scoring in the second half with a short two-yard run, followed up with a failed kick from Monley. Piper scored his second touchdown of the day with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter after collecting a short five-yard pass from Welch.

Down 41-27, Pomona scored with seconds left in the third quarter on a Luke Sweeney run. Once again the Sagehen kicker was unable to convert his PAT. Sweeney followed up his touchdown with another third of the day in the fourth quarter. Pomona attempted a two-point conversion following the Sweeney touchdown but failed.

Senior Kevin Carpenter closed out the scoring with a pass from Welch to seal the victory for Lewis & Clark.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. when they travel to St. Paul, Minnestoa to take on Macalester.
