WEST LINN, Ore. - Freshman Mike Hathaway pitched 8.1 innings in the second game of the Lewis & Clark baseball teams Northwest Conference double-header against the George Fox Bruins to earn its third conference victory of the season. The Bruins picked up a win in the first game.
The Pioneers fell in game one 15-1 before bouncing back to earn a 6-3 victory in the night cap. Lewis & Clark is now 5-28 on the season and 3-17 in NWC action. The Bruins are now 22-9 overall and 12-8 in conference play.
The Pioneers struggled to get the Bruins out in the first game. Sophomore Eliot Smith scored the Pioneers lone run of the first game with a solo homerun to right field in the top of the seventh.
Hathaway pitched his best game of the season in game two, going 8.1 innings and holding the Bruins to 10 hits. Tucker Laurence put the Pioneers on the board first in the second game with a lead-off homerun over right center.
The Pioneers tacked on another run in the fourth inning with Geoff Wertz coming in to score on an RBI groundout by Smith.
The Bruins earned a run back in the fifth inning with Zac Isreal to come in to score on a single by Derek Blankenship.
Back-to-back homeruns in the sixth put the Pioneers ahead 4-1. Laurence started things with a solo shot to center field, followed by Smith's homer over the fence in right field.
George Fox scored again in the seventh when Taylor Hunter knocked in Jay Kirchhof. Kirchhof picked up an RBI in the bottom half of the eighth, cutting the Pioneers lead to 4-3.
Lewis & Clark finished things in the ninth inning with two more runs to take a 6-3 advantage. Parker Dane brought in the first run with an RBI single through the left side that allowed Sam Holman to score. A double from Andrew Frisina plated the Pios final run.
The two sides finish the series on Sunday afternoon.
