PORTLAND, OR.-
Coming back from spring break and a long lay off from competition, the Pioneers win against a short handed George Fox squad. The skies cleared just long enough so that the two teams could get in their makeup contest due to a postponement earlier in the season.
Amalia Nilsson and Izzy Borris wasted a chance for a shutout victory early in the match but cruised the rest of the way as they found their stride against Molly Beaumont and Cara Griffith. Already down two points after surrending the third doubles slot, the Bruin's Alyssa Emoto and Shaina Inn would ride Emoto's strong play to take the last three games to take their match in a 9-7 win over Jill Coleman and Olivia Sweetman.
Starting at the same time as doubles action, Makena McCluskey and Liliya Abildayeva would play the longest singles match of the day. Amalia Nilsson would finish playing a doubles match and take a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #1 singles before McCluskey and Abildayeva would shake hands at the end of their match. Abildayeva would have just a little more in the tank today as she came back to take the decision 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. After Nilsson's victory, and a forfeited singles match, the Pioneers only needed one more point to secure the win. Today, it would be Borris who would pull out the clincher in a tough 6-4, 6-2 win against Inn. Shortly thereafter, Whitney DeBree would pull out her second three set win over Emoto for the year in a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-3) win. Jill Coleman round out the scoring in a fairly dominating win at #4 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Griffith.
The Pioneers take on the Linfield Wildcats next at the LC Tennis Dome on Friday at 3:30 pm.
