TACOMA, Wash. - Finally getting to finish its series against Puget Sound, the Lewis & Clark baseball team fell twice on Monday afternoon to the Northwest Conference leaders. The Loggers earned a 9-8 come from behind victory in game one, before picking up a 7-2 win in game two.
The Pioneers fall to 3-20 on the season and 2-13 in conference play. The Loggers, who are now in sole possession of first place in the NWC, improve to 10-8 overall and 8-1 in the NWC.
The Pioneers went up a run in the first inning with an RBI from Geoff Wertz that brought Andrew Frisina. The Loggers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. An RBI single from Frisina with the bases loaded, tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second. Wertz followed that with a double down the left line that plated two more runs to give the Pios a 4-2 advantage.
The Pioneers padded their lead with three more runs in the sixth with Michael Ball, Tucker Laurence and Roland Greene all coming around to score. Puget Sound managed to earn two back in its half of the inning. Another Pioneer run in the seventh put the Pioneers ahead 8-4.
The Loggers put together two clutch innings to take the lead from the Pioneers and eventually go onto win with a five-run comeback.
Game two began with the Loggers continuing where they left off at the end of game one, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. Puget Sound built up a 6-0 lead by the third inning and kept the Pioneers off the board until the sixth.
Laurence plated the first run for the Pioneers after reaching base on a Logger error. Greene scored the teams other run, reaching on a single and scoring on another Logger error.
Puget Sound ended the scoring in the bottom of the inning, sealing the victory.
Lewis & Clark returns to the field on April 2 against Oregon Tech at 12 p.m.
