Inspired Play Not Enough Against Whitman

Boxscore

by Jimmy Chau

PORTLAND, OR.-

The make-shift number one doubles team of Whitney DeBree and Izzy Borris took on the challenge of facing the reigning Fall ITA Champions from Whitman, Alyssa Roberg and Elise Otto, head on.  The Pioneer duo came out swinging and unfazed by the task set before them.  Blazing out to a 6-3 lead DeBree and Borris were looking at the possibility of pulling off one of the biggest upsets of this season.  Roberg and Otto wouldn't go down easily though as the tested duo would slowly work their way back into the match by capitalizing on tentative play by the Pios, and ultimately capture the win 9-7.  The Missionaries would capture the other two doubles flights by an 8-3 score as well and coasted through singles action until the match was decided.

Lead by their two all conference first teamers, Whitman would clinch the match after a 6-2, 6-1 victory by Roberg over DeBree and a highly contested win by Otto over Borris, 6-2, 6-2.  The Pios would pick up a couple victories after the match was decided.  Olivia Sweetman continued her strong weekend in a 6-1, 6-3 win over Olivia Bates and Catherine Eichhorn picked up her first win 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-2).

The Pioneers face slim odds of making the conference championships but look forward to keeping their hopes alive in their next match against Pacific Lutheran University at 2 pm in Tacoma, WA.
