CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Lewis & Clark
football team opened the 2010 season on the road against the
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night in Claremont, Calif. The
Stags (1-0) earned a convincing 65-21 win over the Pioneers (0-1)
in front of their home crowd.
The Pioneers first score did not come until the second half on a
seven-yard Harrison Keller reception from Keith Welch, making the
score 30-7, ending the Stags dreams of a shutout. Despite the
drive, the Stags continued to pressure and take advantage of
Pioneer errors, scoring 35 more points throughout the remainder of
the contest.
Junior Brandis Piper doubled the Pioneers score with 12:49 to
play in the fourth quarter on a wide open reception in the endzone.
The pass came after Welch rolled out to find Piper wide open
27-yards down field. The Pioneers final touchdown of the game came
seven-yard rush from freshman Alex Pursel with 4:25 remaining.
The Pioneers offense finished the night with 234 total yards,
while the Stags ended with 491. Joevonte Mayes led the Pioneers in
rushing with 17 carries for 80-yards, while Keller finished with
five receptions for a 47 total yards. Welch ended the night
10-of-21 passing for 97 yards, including two touchdowns.
Freshman kicker Simon Monley began his Pioneer career a perfect
3-for-3 on PATs, while kicking off four times for a total of 189
yards.
Dan Curtin led the Pioneer defense with 10 tackles. Chris Kelly
contributed eight tackles and Matt Lettunich and Chuck Krause added
seven each.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
when they host Pomona-Pitzer in their home opener at Griswold
Stadium.
