PORTLAND, Ore. - After 14 innings of play, the
Lewis & Clark baseball team could not hang on, dropping a 5-2
decision to the George Fox Bruins on Sunday afternoon at the Huston
Sports Complex in game three of the Northwest Conference
Series. The Pioneers outhit the Bruins 13 hits to 8 but had 2
errors to George Fox's 1.
Inning one passed quickly with two quick outs for the Bruins and
a walked batter caught stealing. The Pioneers finished with three
ground balls to conclude the first.
The Bruins scored their first two runs of the game starting with
Trask, hit by a pitch and then advancing from a double to center by
Winterstein and a grounder from Rapacz. Winterstien crossed over
the plate with a single to left field by Anderson. Inning two was
uneventful for L&C with three outs from Laurence, Smith and
Bray.
Ball reached first on an error in the fourth by the Bruin
shortstop and flew over the plate on a double from Baffaro. The
Pioneers stepped it up again in the sixth with a run from Greene
starting with a single down the left field line.
Innings seven through thirteen were scoreless with three hits
from the Bruins and five from the Pioneers, respectively.
Bray, Dane, Laurence, Baffaro, Smith and Ball all hit singles for
L&C. George Fox players Trask, Anderson, and Winterstein also
hit singles.
George Fox turned on the power in the fourteenth. Anderson lead
with a double to left center and advanced to third on an error. The
pioneers intentionally walked Burch pushing Knudson to second. With
a single by Woo, Burch pushed on to third. Anderson ran to home and
Knudson scored unearned. On a fielder's choice Woo flew to
second. A single to shortstop from Stahl moved Woo to third and a
fly ball from Gantenbein gave Woo an unearned run. The Bruins
finished the top with a fly ball from Aldrich.
With fans biting their nails in the stands in the bottom of the
fourteenth the Pioneers took to the plate. Perez hit a quick single
up the middle and Ball followed with one to the pitcher advancing
Perez to second. Baffaro and Dane unfortunately struck out looking
but Ball advanced to second on a balk and Perez moved to third.
Laurence was the last batter for the Pios and grounded out to
first.
Pioneer Jim Bray led his team defensively throwing to Tucker
Laurence at first giving Laurence 14 putouts while Zach Perez led
offensively with three solid hits. Michael Ball threw for 28
batters while Eliot Smith followed close behind for 23.
On Tuesday April 20, L&C will travel to Forest Grove, Ore.
to take on the Pacific Boxers at 6:00pm.
