PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark baseball
team could not hold on to defeat the George Fox Bruins in game two
of its Northwest Conference double-header on Saturday afternoon at
the Huston Sports Complex. The Pioneers held an early lead, but the
Bruins came back to win the second game 14-8. George Fox also
earned a victory in the first game of the day, winning 7-1.
Game one belonged to the Bruins who scored seven unanswered runs
in the first seven innings of play. The Bruins first run came in
the second inning on an RBI single by Dan Winterstein. Four more
runs in the second and third inning gave George Fox an early 5-0
advantage.
The Bruins tacked on their final two runs of the contest in the
top of the seventh inning, with Winterstein picking up another RBI
single before coming around to score himself.
Parker Dane scored the Pioneers lone run of the game courtesy of
an error by the Bruin third baseman. Dane reached base on a single
to left field, before advancing to second on a ground out by Andrew
Frisina. An error by the George Fox shortstop allowed Dane to move
to third.
The Bruins posted a run in the top of the first inning to grab
the quick lead, but freshman Eliot Smith answered back for the
Pioneers in the bottom half of the inning with a monster home run
over the fence in right field. The Pioneer lefty jumped all over
the first pitch that came his way, sending it into the trees over
the tall fence that stands in right field.
The Pioneers kept the momentum going their way, taking advantage
of the Bruin pitching in the bottom of the third inning, posting
five runs on three hits for a 6-1 advantage. Guiseppe Baffaro came
around to score the first run of the inning for the Pioneers on a
sacrifice bunt by Sami Morgan.
Some pitching mistakes by the Bruins put more Pioneer runners in
scoring position, which allowed Michael Ball to score on a Tucker
Laurence single to left field. Senior Jim Bray doubled to left
field, sending Laurence and Smith around to score. Bray would move
to third on the throw home. The third baseman would make his way
home with the next Pioneer batter, as Dane hit a sac fly to right
field.
The Bruins cut the Pioneer lead to 6-3 in the top of the fourth
inning, after plating two runs on two hits and a Pioneer error.
Morgan earned the two runs back for the Pioneers, hitting a two-run
home run over the fence in left center, picking up Baffaro along
the way.
The Morgan home run set something off inside the Bruins, who
buckled down and held the Pioneers scoreless throughout the
remainder of the game, while plating 11 runs of their own.
George Fox scored one run in the top of the fifth inning to make
the game 8-4, before tying things in the sixth inning. Seth
Anderson hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning after the
Bruins had already scored one run, tying the game 8-8.
Winterstein picked up another RBI in the top of the seventh
inning, knocking in Sam Stahl on a sac fly to center field. The
Bruins scored four more runs in the top of the eighth to take a
13-8 lead, before scoring their final run of the game in the ninth.
The two teams return to the field on Sunday, April 18 at noon
for the final game of the series. Prior to the start of the game
the Pioneers will honor their three seniors and junior Ryo
Kawashima.
