PORTLAND, Ore. - On a less than ideal day for
baseball, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers fell to the Puget Sound
Loggers 12-6 on Sunday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex in
game three of their Northwest Conference Series. The Pioneers
earned two victories on Saturday to earn the 2-1 edge in the
overall series.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 8-13 on the season and 6-9 in
conference play. The Loggers improve to 10-12 overall and 5-4 in
the NWC.
The Loggers took a commanding 7-0 lead through the first three
innings of play, posting three runs in the top of the first and two
in each of the next two innings.
The Pioneers chipped away at the Logger lead in the bottom of
the fifth, posting four runs to cut the lead to 7-4. Sophomore
Michael Ball got the scoring started with an RBI single to center
field that allowed Geoff Wertz to score from second. Junior
Guiseppe Baffaro came in to score on a bases loaded walk to Tucker
Laurence. Nate Grisham picked up two RBI's with a single to left
field that brought Parker Dane and Ball in to score.
Puget Sound increased its lead in the top of the seventh,
scoring three runs on two hits and two Pio errors to build a 10-4
cushion. A double to left center by Matt Cox in the eighth inning
allowed Mark Rockey to score, increasing the Logger lead to 11-4.
The Pioneers responded in the bottom of the eighth inning,
scoring two runs on an Zach Perez single to center field that
brought Sam Holman and Jim Bray in to score.
One more Logger run in the top of the ninth ended the scoring,
sending them back to Tacoma with the 12-6 victory.
The Pioneers return to the field on Wednesday, March 31 with a
single game against the Willamette Bearcats at 4 p.m. at the Huston
Sports Complex.
