SPOKANE, Wash. – The Lewis & Clark
men's basketball team fell to the 15-ranked Whitworth
Pirates, 85-63, on Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse in
Northwest Conference action.
With the loss the Pioneers fall to 6-12 on the season and 5-5 in
NWC action. The Pirates improve to 17-2 overall and a perfect 10-0
in conference.
In the first half, the Pioneers did their best to hang with the
Pirates after the Bucs jumped out to a 27-16 lead on back-to-back
three pointers. The Pioneers pulled within two points, 29-27, on a
three pointer from sophomore James Hollins with 5:03 remaining in
the half. Whitworth would increase the lead to seven with 14
seconds remaining in the half, before a jumper by Kelly Edwards at
the buzzer sent the Pios into the locker room down 41-36.
In the second half, the Pirates began to pull away, picking up 10
points from Nate Montgomery in the first nine minutes of action.
The Pioneers would not be able to find the rhythm they had in the
first half, falling to the Pirates 85-63.
Edwards led the Pios with 19 points, while Hollins chipped in 18
points and nine boards. Hollins finished seven-of-nine from the
charity stripe, while Edwards finished six-for-nine.
The Pirates were led by Bo Gregg, who scored 22 points, while
Montgomery finished with 20.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. when they
take on the Linfield Wildcats in McMinnville.
