PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark men's
basketball team opened its 2009-10 home campaign in style with a
Northwest Conference win over Whitman College, taking down the
Missionaries 82-76 in overtime.
The Missionaries got on the board first, taking a 3-0 lead with
18:31 on the clock courtesy of a three-pointer from Justin Artis.
The Pioneers would quickly counter, going on a 7-0 run in the next
two minutes to take control of the game. The two sides would tie
the game twice before the Missionaries regained the advantage,
taking a 15-13 lead with 11:16 to play on a Drew Raher jumper.
Tyler Tsukazaki would give the Pioneers the lead back with 8:45 to
play in the half, after a successful free-throw. The Pioneers would
go on to own the rest of the half, running to a 10 point advantage
on a jumper from James Hollins with 5:24 on the clock. The
Missionaries would earn a point back here and there, but it would
not be enough to stop the Pios from heading into the locker room
with a 37-27 lead.
The second half began were the first half left off, with the
Pioneers opening the period on a 9-2 run to take a 46-30 lead in
the first three minutes. The Pioneers would continue to hold a
commanding double digit lead up until the 2:38 mark when Daniel
Davidson hit a jumper that cut the Pio lead to 65-56. From that
point on the Missionaries would go onto play like a team possessed,
closing out the game on a 19-5 run to send the game into overtime
with the score tied 70-70.
Overtime saw both teams hold control of the scoreboard, while tying
the game on three occasions, but it would be the Pioneers who would
prevail with the 82-76 victory.
Junior Kelly Edwards ended the night with a game-high 20 points,
while chipping in eight assists. Sophomore James Hollins posted his
fifth double-double of the season, after finishing with 14 points
and 10 rebounds. Senior Tyler Tsukazaki posted 17 points, while
classmate Josh Kollasch had 13.
Brandon Shaw led the way for the Missionaries, ending with a
team-high 18 points, while Brady Brent put up 15.
The Pioneers return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m. when
they host the Whitworth Pirates in another Northwest Conference
match-up.
