GAME TWO
FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
baseball team ended its 2009 season with a split decision with the
Pacific Boxers in Northwest Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers earned a hard fought 6-5 win in game one, before
slipping to the Boxers 3-2 in game two. The Pios end the season
8-26 overall and 8-21 in NWC play, which solidifies a seventh place
conference finish.
Michael Ball put the Pioneers up 1-0 in the first inning, coming
around to score on a fielding error by the Boxer's
centerfielder that also allowed Jordan Wlodarczyk to reach base.
Ryan Kostecka knocked in the next two Pio runs, bringing in A.J.
Brown and Jim Bray with a single up the middle.
The Boxers answered back in the bottom of the second inning, tying
the game 3-3 on a base clearing double by Keith Anderson. Anderson
fired a shot down the left field line, allowing Scott Rowland,
Brandon Kon and Nate Rasmussen to come around to score.
The Pioneers once again took control of the lead, this time in the
third inning with Bray collecting the RBI. Sami Morgan scored the
Pio run after reaching on a bunt, before crossing the plate on
Bray's single. Not to be outdone, the Boxers put up a run of
their own in the bottom half of the inning, to once again tie the
game.
Ball once again came around to score, putting the Pios up 5-4 in
the fourth inning. Wlodarczyk earned the RBI, reaching on a
fielders choice before advancing to second on the throw. L&C
tacked on one more run in the top of the next inning with a single
from Tucker Laurence. Laurence sent the ball through the middle of
the field, allowing Sam Holman to come home.
The Boxers came close to once again catching the Pios, putting up
another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that would be as
close as they would come. Evan Fairmont picked up the win for the
Pios, while Alex St. Pierre earned the save.
Game two was another dogfight, with both teams keeping things
close. The Pios once again jumped out front early, taking a 1-0
lead in the second inning. Morgan came around to score the run on a
single from Parker Dane.
The Boxers tied things in the fourth inning, before putting up two
more in the sixth for a 3-1 advantage. Rasmussen scored one of the
Boxers runs in the sixth, before Kevin Schwartz came around to
score.
Dane pulled the Pios within one run in the top of the seventh,
coming around to score on a single from Neal Finch. L&C tried
hard to put up one more run before the end of the inning, but were
unable to do so, falling to the Boxers by one.
