PORTLAND, Ore., - The Lewis & Clark
men's tennis team has found its groove, winning its second
consecutive match of the season, defeating Northwest Conference foe
Pacific (Ore.) on Friday evening at the Tennis Dome. The Pioneers
defeated the Tigers 6-3, with Vincent Groot leading the way in the
No. 1 singles spot by taking down Michael Okada in straight sets
(7-5, 6-3).
Luke Wheeler picked up a point for the Pioneers after knocking off
Spencer Hing 6-3 in the first set before grabbing a 7-6 (7-3) win
in the second set. The Pioneers also earned two singles points from
William Parker and Matthias Kullowatz. Parker's point came
against Nhat Nguyen at the No. 5 spot, with the pair battling
through two sets and a tie-breaker (7-6 [7-3], 6-3). Kullowatz
defeated Hector Alcayde in three sets (3-6, 7-5, 6-3) from the No.
6 spot, to help guide the Pioneers to a 4-2 advantage in
singles.
The Pioneers also picked up two points in doubles action, with
Groot and Peter Ray taking out Hing and Micah Leo 8-6 from the No.
1 spot. Andrew Moller and Parker teamed up in the No. 3 doubles
spot to earn a 9-7 win over Nguyen/Alcayde.
The Pioneers return to the Tennis Dome on Saturday, March 7 at 11
a.m. to host Puget Sound.
