GAME ONE
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
baseball team managed to get in one game of its doubleheader
against Northwest Conference member Whitman on Saturday afternoon,
defeating the Missionaries 24-4 in seven innings. Game two of the
series was postponed due to the poor field conditions, moving the
game back until Sunday, March 29 at the Houston Sports Complex.
The Pioneers got their bats going with six different players going
the distance, knocking seven baseballs out of the park. The Pios
also collected eight doubles and one triple coming from centerfield
Michael Ball.
Jordan Wlodarczyk led the way for the Pios, hitting 4-5 with two
home runs and two doubles, while picking up six RBI's. Parker
Dane and Tucker Laurence both ended their days hitting 4-5, each
collecting a home run.
The Pios jumped on top early posting five runs in the first inning,
with Dane nailing a walk off home run over the fence in left
center. Jim Bray would collect his first home run of the season,
with two outs and Wlodarczyk on second, bringing the Pio lead to
5-0.
Laurence made the score 6-0 in the bottom of the second, knocking
in Dane on a double to right field. Laurence came around to score
with the next L&C batter, with Sami Morgan picking up his first
double of the day. Wlodarczyk made it 9-0 Pios when he hit one over
the fence in left field. Ball scored the team's final run of
the inning moments later on a fielding error by the
Missionaries.
Whitman collected a run of its own in the top of the third, but
Lewis & Clark answered back in the bottom of the inning with
four more runs. Laurence started the scoring, hitting his second
home run of the game, bringing in Dane, who had doubled down the
right field line. Wlodarczyk followed up Laurence's home run
with a double to center. A.J. Brown picked up his first of the day
after the Wlodarczyk double, to make the score 14-1 after
three.
Four more runs in the bottom of the fourth increased the
Pio's advantage to 18-1. Wlodarczyk collected his team
leading sixth home run of the season with a drive over the left
center fence.
The Missionaries were able to take advantage of some Pio miscues in
the top of the fifth, collecting three runs to cut the Pio lead to
ten. Defensively Whitman buckled down in the bottom of the inning,
holding L&C scoreless.
The sixth inning would be a different story, with the Pioneers
collecting six more runs to jump to a 24-4 lead. The inning started
with Dane reaching base on a walk, followed by a fielders choice to
Laurence, with Dane moving to second on an error. Both runners
would come around to score with the next Pio batter, as Morgan
fired one over the fence down the left field line. A triple by Ball
two batters later brought in Wlodarczyk and Adam Rager. Ball would
score the team's final run of the game, coming across the
plate on a fielders choice by Kevin Condon.
The two sides will square off again on Sunday, March 29 at the
Houston Sports Complex at 12 p.m. playing one nine inning game,
followed by a seven inning matchup.
