TACOMA, Wash., - The 2008-09 men's
basketball season came to an end for Lewis & Clark on Thursday
night as the Pioneers slipped to #1 seeded Puget Sound in the
Northwest Conference Tournament semi-finals 86-74. The Pioneers
were led by senior David Berggren who ended his career with 25
points, while Tyler Tsukazki contributed 14 points from the
bench.
Puget Sound jumped out to an early first half lead, pulling ahead
by as many as seven points before the Pioneers mounted a comeback
that saw them take control of the scoreboard with 11:20 on the
clock. Tsukazaki captured the lead for the Pioneers after knocking
down a three-pointer with an assist from James Hollins. It
didn't take long for the Loggers once again take control of
the game, running up a 38-24 lead with 5:01 remaining in the half.
Lewis & Clark would cut the Loggers lead to 11 points as both
teams headed into the intermission.
Tyson Papenfuss would pull the Pioneers within three points in the
second half to complete the old fashioned three-point play with
16:51 left in the game. The Loggers would once again pull away from
the Pioneers with 11:05 to play, following a made jumper from
Austin Boyce to give his team a 63-53 advantage. Despite their best
efforts at a come from behind victory, the Pioneers would not be
able to pull themselves back within a single basket, as the Loggers
extended their undefeated NWC record.
Lewis & Clark shot 52.1 (25-48) percent from the floor, while
Puget Sound ended the night shooting 60.7 (37-61) from field goal
range. The Pioneers finished the game out shooting the Loggers from
the charity stripe, draining 14 of 17 (.824) compared to the
Loggers six of nine (.667).
The Pioneers end their season with an overall record of 16-10 and
10-6 in the NWC.
