SALEM, Ore., - It was the tale of two halves for
the Lewis & Clark men's basketball team, who fell to
Willamette 60-58 on the road Saturday night in a Northwest
Conference match-up. The Pioneers held an eight point lead heading
into halftime, outscoring Willamette 32-24, before the Bearcats
rallied to take the second half 36-26.
David Berggren led the Pioneers, recording one of the games two
double-doubles, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 boards. Berggren
finished 7-10 from the free throw line, while knocking down three
3-pointers during the course of the game.
The Pioneers cruised to an early 15-5 lead in the first five
minutes of the first half, with Berggren hitting a wide open three
to give his team the 10 point advantage. The Bearcats would chip
away at the lead, pulling within one point with 8:13 to play in the
half, but the Pioneers would turn up the heat taking an eight point
lead heading into the locker room.
Willamette came out of the locker room ready to play, scoring the
first six points of the second half to close the Pioneers lead to
just two with 18:24 on the clock. The Bearcats would tie the game
35-35 with 15:08 remaining, before capturing the lead just a minute
later. The Pioneers would own possession of the scoreboard with
just over two minutes remaining on the clock with a buried
3-pointer from James Hollins.
The Bearcats would tie the game for the sixth time with 2:09 left
with a Willamette 3-pointer. The Pioneers would try to mount a
comeback in the final minutes of the game, but would be unable to
regain the lead they had in the first half.
The Pioneers return to the court on Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. taking on
Whitman in a NWC match-up in Walla Walla.
