PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
Pioneers managed to come out of its rain soaked Northwest
Conference match-up with Whitworth with few injuries, unlike its
opponent, but unfortunately could not come out with the win,
falling 34-7.
The Pioneers fall to 1-7 on the season and 0-5 in the NWC, while
the Pirates conclude their season 5-5 overall and 3-3 in conference
play.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard first, putting one in on their
first possession on a 22-yard rush from Milton Nelson. The second
quarter began with Whitworth keeping the Pioneers trapped on their
own end of the field, forcing a punt. The Pirates took over in
Pioneer territory, scoring once again on a Nelson rush.
Whitworth made it 20-0 with 2:37 to play in the half when Sean
Scott rushed nine-yards into the end zone. The Pirates would not
score on their point after attempt after the holder fumbled the
ball.
In the second half, the Pirates once again got on the board first,
using a 40-yard run by Scott to make it 27-0 with 13:35 remaining
in the game. The Pioneers earned their way onto the scoreboard with
4:31 left to play as junior quarterback Tucker Laurence ran the
ball in from nine-yards out, making the score 27-7 Pirates.
The final tally came with 3:44 left to play as Zack Clow connected
with Andy Knox for a 30-yard touchdown pass for the 34-7 Pirate
win.
Lewis & Clark struggled offensively on the day, earning just
161-yards total offense. Laurence finished the game three-of-22
passing for 22-yards and one interception. Laurence led the Pios on
the ground with 16 carries for 106-yards. Defensively, the Pioneers
were led by 11 tackles from Chris Kelly and 10 from freshman Brooks
Patterson.
The Pioneers return home on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. for their
season finale against Puget Sound.
