PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark football
team dropped a hard fought match to the Willamette Bearcats who are
currently ranked #17 according to D3Football. The Bearcats won the
game by the final score of 69-24 to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0
in the Northwest Conference, while the Pioneers slip to 0-3 on the
season and 0-2 in the NWC.
The Bearcats struck early, running up a 42-0 lead in the
game's first 26 minutes. The Bearcats earned a 21-0 lead by
the end of the first quarter on scores by Jamiere Abney, Matthew
Williams and Cory Lowe.
Freshman Logan Kotzian put the Pioneers on the board with 3:50
left to play in the first half, after mishandling a kickoff at the
seven-yard line before recovering. Kotzian picked up the ball on
the two-yard line and raced 98-yards down the right sideline for a
touchdown. Senior Andrew Foote converted the point after, making
the game 42-7.
Lewis & Clark then followed things up with an onside kick that
was recovered by Kotzian on the Willamette 36-yard line. The
Pioneers were able to cut the score to 42-14 seven plays later on a
one-yard rush by quarterback Tucker Laurence. Foote had the PAT to
send the game into the half.
Willamette was able to outscore the Pioneers 27-10 in the second
half. The Pioneers got their first score of the second half on a
31-yard field goal by Foote in the third quarter. Sophomore
quarterback Nic Wilson scored his first touchdown of the season on
a one-yard run in the final five seconds of the contest.
Laurence led the Pioneers in rushing, running the ball 15 times
for a total gain of 36-yards. Laurence completed 21-of-37 for 173
yards. Shawn Evans had a great day for the Pioneers, receiving the
ball seven times for a total of 76-yards. Brooks Patterson led the
way for the Pioneers on the defensive side of the ball, picking up
nine solo tackles and one assist, while Siosifa Tonga earned five
solo tackles and one assist.
The Pioneers return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 17 when they
head to McMinnville to take on Linfield at 1:30 p.m. in a NWC
contest.
