The Pioneers closed out their four-game weekend series against
the George Fox Bruins, falling 10-6 (box score) in extra
innings in game one and 11-4 (box score) in the
finale. Sam Holman had three hits for the Pioneers.
In the first game, the Pioneers broke open a 5-5 tie in
the bottom of the sixth. Roland Greene (freshman, Encinitas,
Calif.) walked to leadoff the inning for the Pioneers. Jordan
Shibata (senior, Pearl City, Hawaii) bunted him over to second.
Back-to-back singles scored the run to put the Pioneers up 6-5 and
three outs away from victory in the seven-inning game.
The Bruins had other plans. Dan Winterstein hit a one-out single,
followed by hits from Todd Siler and Kyle Seymour to tie the game.
After the Pioneers failed to score in the bottom of the seventh,
the game moved into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Bruins' leadoff hitter Pat Bailey
took the first pitch he saw and drove it over the left-center field
wall, making it a 7-6 game. The Bruins added three more runs in the
inning before Bailey came up for the second time in the eighth and
recorded the third out, taking a 10-6 lead. The Pioneers Jordan
Shibata doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth, but the
Pioneers could not advance him, falling 10-6.
Nick Hedgecock of George Fox earned the victory, coming on in
relief in the third inning. He pitched the final 5.2 innings,
allowing just the lone run in the sixth, on five hits with three
walks and four strikeouts. Evan Fairmont (junior, Boulder, Colo.)
took the loss for the Pioneers, throwing the final three innings of
the game.
Pat Bailey had three other hits in addition to his game-winning
home run, going 4-6 with three runs scored and two driven in. The
Pioneers' Jordan Shibata extended his hitting streak to 15 games
(dating back to last season) with a 3-4 performance. Ryan Kostecka
(freshman, Napa, Calif.) also had three hits for the Pioneers.
In game two, Evan Fairmont came back out to start the game for the
Pioneers. The Bruins scored three runs on a 2-RBI double by Ryan
Fobert and an RBI single by Kyle Kuenzi to jump out to a 3-0
lead.
The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the third on RBI
singles from Tucker Laurence (freshman, San Martin, Calif.) and
Neal Finch (junior, Boulder, Colo.) and an RBI double from TJ
Witkowski (sophomore, Tooele, Utah).
A game that seemed destined for extra innings, deadlocked at 3-3,
was broken wide open by a seven-run fifth inning for the Bruins.
The Bruins had five hits in the seventh to drive the seven run
explosion. The Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh,
but fell 11-4.
The Bruins' Shane Dalgleish improved to 3-0 on the season, working
5.0 innings, scattering five hits. The Pioneers scored three runs,
only one earned, off Dalgleish. David La Douceur (freshman, The
Dalles, Ore.) took the loss for the Pioneers.
Pat Bailey had another strong game for Fox, goning 2-3 with two
runs scored. Kyle Kuenzi also went 2-3. Matt Wyckoff and Ryan
Fobert both went 2-4 with 2 RBI.
TJ Witkowski was 2-4 for the Pioneers. Sam Holman (freshman,
Eugene, Ore.) was 1-4 with 2 runs scored. Holman had three hits on
the afternoon for the Pioneers.
With the four game series sweep, the Bruins improve to 10-3 and
remain in first place in the NWC with a 7-1 record. The Pioneers
fall to 3-9, 1-7 NWC.
The Pioneers are on the road next weekend, heading to Tacoma for a
four-game set against the Pacific Lutheran Lutes.
