The Pioneer baseball team dropped game one of Saturday's
doubleheader 7-2 (box score) to the
George Fox Bruins. The Pioneers fell 12-8 (box score) in game
two. Jordan Shibata and TJ Witkowski each had four hits for
the Pioneers.
In game one, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first. After
Jordan Shibata (senior, Pearl City, Hawaii) walked to lead off the
bottom of the first, he came around to score on a single to center
by Sam Holman (freshman, Eugene, Ore.). The Bruins tied the game in
the third on an RBI single from Kyle Kuenzi.
The Pioneers staked starter Jordon Smiley (senior, Las Vegas,
Nevada) to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of third, turning singles from
Roland Greene (freshman, Encinitas, Calif.) and Jordan Wlodarczyk
(junior, Lake Oswego, Calif.) into the Pioneers' second run.
Neither team threatened again until the eighth inning. The Bruins
loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by Kyle Seymour tied
the game. A double by Cody Spencer scored another two. After a
pitching change, the Bruins plated two more on a triple by Josh
Burch and a single by Dan Winterstein to make it a 6-2 game. The
Bruins added another run on three hits in the ninth to earn a 7-2
victory.
Mark Putney, working in relief for the Bruins, earned the win, his
first of the season. He worked the final three innings, allowing
just one hit, walking one, and striking out two. Smiley took the
loss for the Pioneers, allowing nine hits in 7.2 innings, five runs
(four earned), walking three, and striking out six.
The Bruins Kyle Kuenzi was 3-5 for a run scored and a run driven
in. For the Pioneers, Jordan Shibata was 2-4 with a run scored. TJ
Witkowski (sophomore, Tooele, Utah) was also 2-4.
In game two, the Pioneers fell to the Bruins 12-8. Jordan Shibata
hit a solo homerun to leadoff for the Pioneers in the bottom of the
first, putting L&C up 1-0.
The Bruins answered with back-to-back singles to lead off the
second, scoring the tying run on a sac fly. The Pioneers went up
2-1 in the second, using a leadoff walk and a single by Roland
Greene to plate a run.
GFU tied the game in the third on an RBI double by Matt
Wyckoff. The Pioneers took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the
inning with singles from Tucker Laurence (freshman, San Ramon,
Calif.), AJ Brown (junior, Vancouver, Wash.) and Greene.
Trailing 5-2 going into the fifth, Fox scored four runs on four
hits in the inning, including a 2-RBI double by Todd Siler, to take
a 6-5 lead.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to
retake the lead, 7-5. The Pioneer bullpen took over in the sixth.
The Bruins scored six runs on five walks and four hits in the
inning, taking a 12-7 lead.
The Pioneers scored a final run in the bottom of the sixth on an
RBI single by AJ Brown, pushing the score to 12-8.
The Bruins' Kyle Johnson and the Pioneers' Weston Chambers
(freshman, Kallispell, Montana) each threw three scoreless innings
to finish out the game.
Johnson earned the victory for the Bruins, pitching 5.0,
allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. David LaDouceur
(freshman, The Dalles, Ore.) took the loss for the Pioneers.
The first six batters in the Bruin lineup each had two hits in
the game.Matt Wyckoff was 2-4 with two runs scored at 3 RBI.
For the Pioneers, Roland Greene was 3-5 with 2 RBI. Jordan
Shibata was 2-5 with a home run.
The two teams finish their series with two seven-inning games
Sunday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex. The games will be
