The Pioneer women's tennis team opened their busy weekend with a
7-2 (results) victory
over the Puget Sound Loggers Friday in the tennis dome. Amalia
Nilsson posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at #1 singles.
The women took on a shorthanded Logger team. Amalia Nilsson
(freshman, Stockholm, Sweden) and Whitney DeBree (freshman,
Ketchum, Idaho) stayed perfect as a #1 doubles team with their 8-6
victory. Lisa Haruanga (sophomore, Kailua, Hawaii) and Maggie Peach
(sophomore, Bellingham, Wash.) won 8-2 at #2 doubles. The Loggers
had just four players and were forced to concede #3 doubles, #5 and
#6 singles by default.
Amalia Nilsson improved to 8-0 in singles action with a 6-0, 6-0
victory at #1. With the match well in hand, the Pioneers took the
opportunity to give a couple of their singles players the rest of
the evening off and move up other players to a higher position.
Mika Yokoyama (freshman, Tokyo, Japan) rose to the challenge with a
6-4, 6-3 victory at #4 singles.
The Pioneer women improve to 7-2 in the NWC. They will host
Pacific Lutheran Saturday morning at 10 am.
The men fell 5-4 (results) at
Puget Sound. The Pioneers won four of the six singles matches. The
difference in the match were two tight battles in doubles. The
Pioneers fell 8-6 at #1 and 9-7 at #2.
George Allen (sophomore, Madison, Wisc.) won 6-0, 7-6 at #1.
Dirk Frouws (freshman, Oisterwijk, Holland) won 6-4, 6-4 at #3.
Peter Ray (sophomore, Boulder, Colo.) and Adam Rager
(freshman, Bellingham, Wash.) also won their singles matches.
The Pioneer men fall to 2-8 on the season. Puget Sound improves
to 4-5.
