wagon wheel trophy for another year with an 76-10 (box score) victory over
the Pioneers Saturday afternoon. Joevone Mayes had his second 100+
yard rushing performance of the season.
The Pioneers scored their ten points in the second quarter.
After going down 27-0 in the first quarer, the Pioneers used a
17-play, 71-yard drive to set up a 29-yard field goal by Andrew
Foote (junior, Denver, Colo.) to give the Pioneers their first
score of the game.
After a booming 70-yard punt by the Pioneers' new punter, wide

at their own eight yard line, DB Shawn Kelly (sophomore, Clackamas,
Ore.) forced a Willamette fumble on their firs play of the drive
with Devon Baker (sophomore, Beaveron, Ore.) recovering the ball on
the WU 11. An eight yard screen pass from AJ Brown (senior,
Vancouver, Wash.) to Joevonte Mayes (sophomore, Clackamas, Ore.)
put the Pioneers at the hree. AJ Brown punched the ball into the
end zone on the next play for the Pioneers' lone TD of the day.
Joevonte Mayes carried the ball 28 times for 119 yards rushing,
his second 100+ yard rushing performance of the season. Shawn Kelly
led the team in tackles for the second-straight week, with five
solo and three assisted as well as a forced fumble and a fumble
recovery. Danny Lockard (junior, Creswell, Ore.) blocked an extra
point attempt by the Bearcats.
Ryan Kostecka, in his first game serving as the Pioneer punter,
had 169 yards worth of punts, averaging 33.8 per boot, twice
pinning the Bearcats inside the twenty.
With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 1-4, 0-2 NWC. The Bearcats,
currently ranked 18th in the latest AFCA DIII poll, remain
undefeated, improving to 6-0 on the season.
Since 1949, the winner of the Willamette-L&C football game
earns the right to keep a historic Wagon Wheel at its campus until
the next meeting. This traveling trophy, created by the Blue Key
men's honor society in 1948, documents results
with each year's score ingrained into a square plaque in the
middle of the wheel. The Pioneers last won the trophy in 2000.
