The #21 Pioneer men's basketball team defeated the Corban
College Warriors 77-70 (box score) Saturday
night in Salem. Mark Robinowitz scored 17 points for the Pioneers.
Josh Kollasch had ten rebounds.
The home team Corban Warriors edged out to an early seven point
lead, 10-3, with 16:34 left in the first half. A three pointer by
David Berggren (sophomore, Tualatin, Ore.) followed by a three by
Mark Robinowitz (senior, Portland, Ore.), which he hit ten seconds
after subbing into the game, put the Pioneers right into the game.
Corban continued to lead, extending their advantage back out to as
many as seven. The Pioneers, trailing 28-26 with 5:25 left in
the half, began a 12-0 run spanning 4:37, in which they took the
lead and expanded that advantage to ten points, 38-28, on a putback
by Gene Rivera (senior, Kahului, Hawaii). The Warriors made a layup
with four seconds left in the half to cut the Pioneer advantage to
six, 38-32, heading into the break.
In the second half, the Pioneers extended their lead out to
nine, 45-54, at the 13:08 mark when Corban mounted a comeback,
taking a one-point lead, 58-57, after a 13-3 run. With6:18
remaining, Corban led 63-60. A three-pointer by Thomas Tillery
(senior, Portland, Ore.), followed by a Papenfuss layup and a
Robinowitz three put the Pioneers back up five. Corban pulled
within three with 3:17 left in the game, but that was as close as
they would get with the Pioneers making six freethrows in the final
70 seconds of the contest to seal the 77-70 victory.
Thomas Tillery scored ten points with six rebounds. Tillery had
six assists with just one turnover in 30 minutes of playing time.
Gene Rivera also scored ten points with eight rebounds, a block,
and three steals.
The Pioneer bench contributed 41 points to the effort with Mark
Robinowitz hitting five threes, scoring a team-high 17 points.
Tyson Papenfuss scored 16 points, going 8-11 from the floor. He
also had six rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Josh Kollasch
(sophomore, Tucson, Ariz.) had a team-high ten rebounds. He also
scored six points, had three assists, and a block.
With the victory, the #21 Pioneers improve to 2-1 on the season.
Their next action is Sunday, December 2, when they host Walla Walla
at home at the Pamplin Sports Center. Tip off is at 4pm.
