The Pioneer football team fell 39-0 (box score) to the
Pacific Lutheran Lutes Saturday in Tacoma.
The Lutes led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter in spite of
possessing the ball for just over three minutes in the period.
After forcing the Pioneers to punt on their first possession, the
Lutes took over at their own 48-yard line and drove 52 yards on
seven plays for their first score, taking 3:16 off the clock.
PLU's second score came when senior linebacker Chad Blau
busted sacked Pioneers quarterback AJ Brown. Brown fumbled the ball
on the play, and senior defensive back Jeff Ebel picked it up and
took it 64 yards the other way for the PLU touchdown.
The Lutes added another TD in the second quarter on a 25-yard
run by Aaron Murphy. The Lutes had two touchdowns in the third, on
an eight yard reception to cap a 42-yard drive and a one-yard run
to end a 66-yard drive. The Lutes added their final score in the
fourth quarter with 7:43 remaining in the game on a 58-yard punt
return.
The Pioneer defense had blocked kicks, with the team blocking
the point-after on the first touchdown and the final two
scores.
Joevonte Mayes (freshman, Milwaukie, Ore.) led the Pioneers with
51 yards rushing, with 21 of those coming on one play. Rob Holmes
(freshman, Klamath Falls, Ore.) had the longest catch for the
Pioneers, pulling in a 20-yarder. He finished the game with a
team-high 25-receiving yards.
In the passing game, AJ Brown (junior, Vancouver, Wash.) was
7-16 for 68 yards. Tucker Laurence (freshman, San Martin, Calif.)
was 6-10 for 56 yards.
Due to technical difficulties in Tacoma, the game was not
available live on the web Saturday. An audio replay of the second
half of the game will be posted on the website Tuesday.
