Vanek Scores First Collegiate Goal, But Slugs Down Women's Soccer 4-1

Mischa Vanek scored just 16 seconds into the game

PORTLAND, Ore.—Junior Mischa Vanek scored her first collegiate goal in the first minute, but visiting UC Santa Cruz responded with four-straight goals, to earn a 4-1 win over Lewis & Clark College women's soccer on Sunday morning.Ā

THE BASICS
Ā
UC Santa Cruz 4, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-3-1)Ā
(Santa Cruz 2-1-1)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Vanek scored just 16 seconds into the game but Santa Cruz posted three goals in the second half to secure the win.Ā
Ā
First year Brie Maker made her collegiate debut in net for Lewis & Clark. Maker made four saves on eight shots, including a brilliant diving stop in the first half to keep the game 1-1.Ā
Ā
Sunday's game featured four goals that were scored from well outside the box.Ā
Ā
Vanek opened the scoring before most people were even settled in their seats. Lewis & Clark started with the ball off the opening kick-off. Kate Meinhard sent the ball backwards to Ava Lazzara and she pinged the ball down field. After it pinballed around the midfield, Vanek stole the ball away from a Banana Slugs defender and immediately sent a high lofted shot over the Santa Cruz keeper from 25-yards out.Ā
Ā
Santa Cruz evened the score on their first shot of the contest. The goal came in a similar fashion, as the ball bounced around the midfield and fell to Camille Anneet. The Banana Slugs leading scorer fired a shot from 30-yards out that went just underneath the bar.Ā
Ā
The visitors had a chance to make it 2-1 just before halftime, but Maker made a jumping save to her right to get a hand on Sydney Boyd's shot. Maker deflected it out for a corner kick and Maker added one final save in the final minute of the half to keep the score 1-1.Ā
Ā
Vanek nearly made it 2-1 to start the second half. The ball fell to her just outside the box in the first minute of the second half, but her shot bounced just wide of the far post.Ā
Ā
Boyd made it 2-1 at 52:22. The Banana Slugs earned a corner kick from the left side of the field and Boyd sent a right-footed corner that went just over Maker and in for an olimpico.Ā
Ā
Santa Cruz would continue to press their advantage and had a great chance to make it 3-1 several minutes later. A Banana Slugs player dribbled into the box with senior back Elle Sparks looking to win the ball off her. With Maker coming out trying to cut down the angle, the forward dribbled past both players and had an angle on goal, but Sparks stepped in front of the Banana Slugs attacker to win the ball back and deny the scoring opportunity.Ā
Ā
Santa Cruz made it 3-1 at 76:16 when Kristi Truong scored a shot from 30-yards out from the far side. They tacked on one final goal at 89:33 with Emilie Brack setting up Cadence Fisher for a shot inside the six-yard box.
