Hot Start Leads Whittier Past Men's Soccer

Emmet McDonough made his season debut and played 56 minutes off the bench

PORTLAND, Ore.—Whittier College struck for three goals in the first 12:11 and held on for a 4-0 win over Lewis & Clark College men's soccer on Thursday night at Griswold Stadium.

THE BASICS

Whittier 4, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-2)
(Whittier 0-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior goalie Micaiah Garan tied his career-high with 10 saves, including several brilliant stops on corner kicks in the second half.

Senior Daniel Estoll and sophomore Sam London each led the hosts with two shots and one shot on goal apiece. Kaushal Riedman, Dylan Weinstein, Emmet McDonough and Ren Fukuoka all added one shot.

Bobo Andersson and Rowan Slater keyed the early run for the Poets. Anderson scored the opening goal and earned an assist on the third marker. Slater picked up assists on each of the first two goals.

Whittier opened the scoring at 4:39. Matias Delso took a throw-in deep in the Pioneers defensive half and launched it into the box. Slater headed it on to the center of the box and Andersson was the first to react and sent a right-foot shot inside the near post.

Kevin Bravo made it 2-0, when he took a pass from Slater and found the back of the net at 8:43.

The visitors tallied their third goal at 12:11. Andersson and Nils Lindfors played a give-and-go and Lindfors tucked the ball inside the far post for a 3-0 edge.

Lewis & Clark created their best chance of the game late in the first half. Seniors Aashir Walson and Ishan Abraham combined to win the ball in the Poets half and Walson sent a pass into space down the left channel. Abraham caught up to the pass and delivered a cross into the box that found an onrushing McDonough. The sophomore immediately fired a shot from less than 10 yards-out but it was tipped immediately by a defender and went out for a corner kick.

Whittier capped off the scoring in the 83rd minute, when Nick Coop dribbled through traffic and scored from the left side.

Lewis & Clark brought on a series of subs late and Estoll, first year Raff Ladd and junior Owen Carroll caused the Whittier defense fits. The trio combined for several chances and nearly broke up the Poets shutout bid.
