Women's Soccer's Comeback Effort Falls Short Against Boxers

First year Claire Anderson scored a goal on her first collegiate touch

PORTLAND, Ore.—First year Claire Anderson scored a goal on her first collegiate touch, but Lewis & Clark College women's soccer's comeback effort fell just short in a 2-1 loss to Pacific University.Ā
Ā
THE BASICS
Ā
Pacific 2, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 1-6-1, Northwest Conference 1-3-0)Ā
(Pacific 2-3-3, NWC 1-1-3)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Anderson's goal off a short-corner setup in the 71stĀ minute sparked a frenetic Pioneers comeback but Lewis & Clark fell just short of a second-straight conference result.Ā
Ā
Seniors Carli Driskill and Elle Sparks each posted assists on Anderson's goal. The first year came on as a sub for the first time in her collegiate career in the 70thĀ minute and scored 18 seconds later.Ā
Ā
Senior goalie Anna Ingadottir posted three saves in net for Lewis & Clark.Ā
Ā
Pacific senior Mirella Garcia scored the opening goal and setup the eventual game-winner. Fellow senior Gwendolyn Saing posted her third goal of the season to make it 2-0 early in the second half.Ā
Ā
After having a bye on Saturday, Pacific came out with a lot of energy to start the contest and jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 15:24.Ā
Ā
Taite Taniguchi sent a pass out wide to Garcia just outside the box and the senior blasted a right-footed shot from a tight angle to make it 1-0.Ā
Ā
The visitors made it 2-0 at 54:17. Garcia floated a long ball into the Pioneers half and Saing brought it down and then lifted a shot, from the top of the box, over Ingadottir to make it 2-0.Ā
Ā
After posting just three shots in the first 70 minutes, Lewis & Clark cut the deficit in half at 70:14. Driskill slid a pass backwards on the turf for Sparks and the senior back immediately sent a low pass to the top of the box. Anderson laced a right-footed shot that floated over the keeper and into the far netting to make it 2-1.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark would add two shots in the final 20 minutes and would create several other chances, but they couldn't find a way to even the score.Ā
Ā
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Pacific outshot Lewis & Clark 13-6 and held a 5-1 advantage on shots on goal.Ā
  • Anderson is the second Pioneer first year to score a goal on her debut this season. Riley Yip scored in her first collegiate game on September 6 against Northwest University (Wash.).Ā
  • Driskill leads Lewis & Clark this season with her two assists and four points.Ā
