Women's Soccer Earns Tie Against Blues

Junior Mischa Vanek scored her team-leading second goal of the season

PORTLAND, Ore.—Junior Mischa Vanek scored her second goal of the season to give Lewis & Clark College women's soccer an early lead and the Pioneers held on to earn a 1-1 home tie against Whitman College on Friday night.Ā
Ā
THE BASICS
Ā
Lewis & Clark 1, Whitman 1
(Lewis & Clark 1-6-2, Northwest Conference 1-3-1)Ā
(Whitman 3-1-5, NWC 2-0-3)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Vanek scored in the eighth minute, on the team's first shot of the game, for her second-fastest goal of the season/her career. The junior played a give-and-go with first year Riley Yip and ripped a shot just underneath the Whitman keeper to give Lewis & Clark a 1-0 advantage.Ā
Ā
Whitman senior Ella Johnson tied the game in the 78thĀ minute off a high shot that floated in just underneath the bar.Ā
Ā
Vanek's goal was her team-leading second tally of the season. Yip picked up her first collegiate assist on the play.Ā
Ā
Senior Delaney Jones made her second start of the year and first appearance during conference play. Jones made three saves on four shots.Ā
Ā
Whitman goalies Eleanor Johnson and Seanee Still each played 45 minutes. Johnson allowed a goal on the only shot on target she faced and Still made one save in the second half.Ā
Ā
The Blues had the early advantage and posted three corner kicks and a pair of shots before the Pioneers goal.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark worked their way up the field with a series of passes. Vanek received a pass just outside the box and immediately fed Yip to her right. The first year slid a through ball for Vanek behind the last defender and Vanek ran onto the pass and fired a low right-footed shot that snuck just under Johnson at 7:36.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers would finish the half with only four shots but would pressure the Blues with all four of their looks. Vanek and junior Iris Stutzman fired good looks wide of the net in the middle portion of the half and Vanek added a third shot with 15 minutes to go before half.Ā
Ā
Junior Grace Smith nearly made it 2-0 right after halftime. She brought the ball down in the box and sent a right-footed shot just wide of the post while being pushed off balance.Ā
Ā
Johnson nearly tied the game at 1-1 in the 75thĀ minute, when she floated a long left-footed shot off the underside of the bar and it bounced in front of the goal line and was cleared away.Ā
Ā
The senior received a pass from Emoree Lash and hit a similar shot that went just below the crossbar at 77:01 to tie the contest.Ā
Ā
Smith would record the only shot in the final 12:59, as the two teams settled for a 1-1 tie.Ā
Ā
