George Fox Slips Past Men's Soccer With Late Penalty

Men's Soccer finished with their second-most shots of the season (nine)

PORTLAND, Ore.—George Fox University scored a penalty-kick goal with 1:22 remaining, to earn a 1-0 win over nine-man Lewis & Clark College men's soccer in the Pioneers 2025 Northwest Conference home opener.Ā
Ā
THE BASICS
Ā
George Fox 1, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-6-1, NWC 0-3)Ā
(George Fox 3-3-3, NWC 1-2-2)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Lewis & Clark started on the back foot in the first half and easily could have had fallen behind if not for the play of junior goalie Micaiah Garan. The keeper made five of his 10 saves in the first half and got some help from the woodwork to help keep the Bruins at bay.Ā
Ā
Men's soccer grew into the game over final 15 minutes of the first half and began to push the Bruins early in the second half. The contest felt like it could go either way before a pair of red cards (both second yellows) in the 75thĀ and 86thĀ minute swung the momentum back in favor of the visitors.Ā

Even with George Fox beginning to dominate possession and sending a bevy of shots towards the Pioneers goal, it took a penalty kick at 88:38 to decide the game. George Fox senior Kellin Aguiar stepped up to the penalty spot and sent a low shot into the right-hand corner of the goal for his first goal of the season.Ā
Ā
Garan posted double-digit saves for the second-straight game and fourth time in his career. He made a leaping save in the first half and added several point-blank and double saves.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark finished the game with nine shots. Senior Ben Schwartz and sophomores Kaden Nakamura and Alex Woods all tied for the team lead with two shots. Schwartz (two) and sophomore Aleister AlfstadĀ each posted shots on goal.Ā
Ā
George Fox recorded 10 shots in the first half to own a 10-4 advantage. Garan made four of his five saves over a nine-minute span between 16:13 and 24:36 and the Bruins created another strong chance right afterwards. Raiden Renggli's shot hit the underside of the crossbar and Isaac Williams lifted the rebound up over the bar to keep the game 0-0.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark began to swing the tide just past the half-hour mark. Nakamura posted a pair of shots and Woods sent a cross/shot that went just wide of the far post minutes later.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers kept the Bruins relatively in check through the first 30 minutes of the second half (seven shots/two on target). Lewis & Clark was assessed their first red card at 74:44 and that created more space for the Bruins attack.Ā Ā

George Fox posted eight of their 15 second-half shots in the final 15 minutes. When a second Pioneers player was sent off at 85:32, that created even more space for the visitors to attack.Ā
Ā
