The duo both graduated this year after terrific careers

HILLSBORO, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College senior women's soccer defender Abby Hayes and senior men's golfer Jon Westlake were named Northwest Conference First Team Scholar-Athletes, the league office announced Friday afternoon.Ā
Ā
Abby Hayes – Women's Soccer – Sr. – San Diego, Calif.Ā
Ā
Hayes wrapped up her terrific career at Lewis & Clark in the Fall of 2024. She started all four years on the back line for women's soccer and earned All-Conference accolades in each of her final three seasons. She began her career as an outside back, before moving to center back for her final two seasons. Over the course of her four seasons, she played all 79 games and started 75 contests – including the final 70 of her career. Hayes notched one goal and three assists in 6,913 minutes. She helped the Pioneers rack up 27 shutouts across four seasons, including being part of the 2021 defense that set the program record with 10 shutouts in a single-season. She also served as a captain of the program in each of her final two seasons.Ā
Ā
Hayes graduated this year with a degree in Biology and a 3.93 cumulative GPA. She was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team as a junior and a senior and to the Dean's List every year. She also earned a spot on the NWC Sportsmanship Team as a sophomore. Outside of the field and the classroom, she served as a biology teaching assistant and as a tutor through the Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB) for her final three years.Ā
Ā
"Abby Hayes exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete," women's soccer head coach Jim Tursi said. "As a dedicated captain of the women's soccer team, she led with integrity, supported her teammates, and consistently displayed outstanding sportsmanship. Her commitment on the field, was matched by her excellence in the classroom, earning a high GPA, multiple all-conference honors, and admission to graduate school. Abby is leaving behind a lasting legacy at Lewis & Clark—a standard of leadership, character, and resilience that will inspire and guide the classes to come."Ā
Ā
Jon Westlake – Sr. – Men's Golf – Portland, Ore.Ā
Ā
Westlake made the most of his three academic years in Orange and Black. He played three years on the men's golf team and also competed for two seasons with the men's swimming program. Westlake served as the team captain of the men's golf team this year and helped the program earn their best finish in the Northwest Conference standings since the 2016-17 seasons (sixth overall). He shot a career-low round of 69 (-2) on Day 2 of the George Fox Invitational to help the Pioneers storm back to win the tournament – their first confirmed tournament win since 1972. He shot a career-best average round score of 77.58 (+6) as a senior and posted the lowest round and tournament score (146, +2) of his career.Ā
Ā
In the pool, Westlake made the most of his two seasons. He placed sixth overall in the 100 Breaststroke as a sophomore to earn NWC Second Team All-Conference honors. The Portland native ranks third all-time in program history in the 100 Breaststroke, fourth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 200 Breaststroke and helped the 200 IM Relay team set the program record at the 2023 NWC Championship Meet. He was named the Lewis & Clark Men's Dual-Sport Athlete of the Year (Dan Jones Award) for the 2023-24 school year, based off his success in the pool and on the links.Ā
Ā
Westlake graduated this Spring with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Health Studies. He graduated summa cum laude with a 3.98 GPA. He was a three-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Selection (twice for golf, once for swimming) and was inducted into both the Phi Beta Kappa and Psi Chi honor societies.Ā Ā He also received the Trustee Endowed Scholarship and consistently earned recognition on the Dean's Honor List. Westlake was named the Dell Smith Scholar-Athlete Silver Medalist this year in recognition of his performance on-and-off the links. Throughout his final two years, Westlake interned at OHSU in the behavioral neuroscience department.Ā
Ā
"Jon exemplifies everything you want in a collegiate student-athlete," said golf head coach Brad Breier. "He not only grew as a player, but through time management was able to graduate top of his class, while helping a young team through their transition to college life. A unanimous captain and leader, everything the program achieves in the future will be in large part due to Jon's efforts over his time at LC."
