Buese Finishes Second, Ties School Record With Seventh All-American Award

Riley Buese earned the highest-finish of her career in Thursday's 10K Final

GENEVA, Ohio—Lewis & Clark College track & field senior Riley Buese made more history on Thursday evening, as she posted the best finish of her career at an NCAA DIII National Championship Meet.

Buese finished second overall in the women's 10,000M, to tie the Lewis & Clark school record with her seventh career All-American award.

The senior came into the final event on Day One of the 2025 NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet seeded second overall. She ran within a second of top-seeded and eventual National Champion Penelope Greene of SUNY Geneseo for the opening 5,600 meters. Greene made her move down the backstretch on the 15th lap. The top two runners came up on the runners at the back of the pack and Greene used the opportunity to pass to stretch her lead. She would finish the lap (6,000M) with a four-second advantage and extend it from there.

Buese would run the final 4,000 meters on her own. She would turn in laps of 85 seconds or faster in every lap, to finish the race in 34:20.14. Buese finished 25.66 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Deyanneira Colon Maldonado of Aurora University.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Buese matched Hall of Fame swimmer Debbie Heim Martinez ('91) for the school record with her seventh career All-American award.
  • Her second-place finish in a National Championship race is the best of her career. She previously finished third in the 10K (2024 Outdoors) and in the 5K (2025 Outdoors).
  • Buese's time of 34:20.14 is the second-fastest of her career and in Northwest Conference history. She ran a 34:16.33 earlier this season at the Stanford Invitational.
  • Buese also set the program record for most All-American honors by a track & field and cross country athlete (seven). She needs one more All-American award to match Hall of Famer Paige Daugherty Westcott for the most All-American accolades by an L&C track & field student-athlete (six).
  • Buese finished over a minute faster in the 10,000M than she did at last year's Nationals. She improved her time by 72.95 seconds.
WHAT'S NEXT

Buese will close out her career on Saturday at 1:25 p.m. (Pacific), when she runs the 5,000M Finals.
