O'Leary Sets Career Strikeout Record in Road Finale

Maggie O'Leary set the program record for career strikeouts (248) in game one

NEWBERG, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College softball junior Maggie O'Leary set the program record for career strikeouts in game one, but host George Fox University used a pair of two-run homers to earn a doubleheader sweep over the Pioneers on Friday afternoon.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED

O'Leary's fourth strikeout of the afternoon, helped her break a tie with Janet Freerks (2004-07) for the program record for punch outs. Her 248thĀ career strikeout came with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.Ā

Junior Lacey Marglin led the Pioneers offensive attack on Friday. She finished 4-6 with a double. Sophomore Makena Dahir hit a solo home run and finished with two hits on the day.Ā

GAME ONE RECAPĀ

George Fox used a three-run bottom of the third inning and strong relief pitching to earn a game one victory.Ā 
Ā 
O'Leary earned the start in game one and went 4.2 innings and allowed four hits, four walks and five runs (four earned). The senior struck out four to move from a tie for second all-time into first in program history. Sophomore Ryan Jurischk pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed one hit and one walk.Ā 
Ā 
Marglin went 3-3 with a double out of the cleanup spot. Dahir finished 2-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a solo home run.Ā

Senior Caeleigh Rosenbach added a base hit and junior Gina Ozuna worked a walk and scored a run.Ā 
Ā 
The Pioneers got off to a strong start to game one. Ozuna was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. With two down, she moved to third on a Marglin single and then raced home on a wild pitch.Ā

George Fox took the lead in the bottom of the first. With one down and a runner on second, Brooke Riggins hit a two-run homer to make it 2-1.Ā

Lewis & Clark tied the game in the top of the second. With one down, Dahir blasted a homer over the left-field wall to make it 2-2.Ā

The hosts took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. With one down, the Bruins hit back-to-back singles and then worked a walk to load the bases. O'Leary would strike out Kiley Harris to set the program record for career strikeouts. Nicole Campa followed with a two-run single and the Bruins tacked on a third run on a double steal and a Pioneers error.Ā

The Pioneers would put a runner on in each of the next three innings but the Bruins turned a double play in the fifth and posted an outfield assist in the sixth.Ā

GAME TWO RECAP

George Fox first year Nicole Ledendecker threw a six-hit shutout and Harris hit a two-run home run to lead the Bruins to a doubleheader sweep.Ā 
Ā 
Ledendecker, who allowed one hit in two scoreless innings in game one, scattered five singles and one double across seven innings. She added one strikeout and no walks.Ā

Junior Charlize Pope and Jurischk split game two. Pope went three innings and limited the Bruins to four hits, two walks and two runs. She tacked on two strikeouts. Jurischk threw the final three innings and allowed two hits, one walk and one run.Ā

Ozuna went 2-3 and Gildersleeve added a double and a stolen base. The top four in the Pioneers lineup, Ozuna, Emily Patton, Madison Scroggins and Marglin, combined for five of the team's six hits.Ā

With two down in the bottom of the first, Riggins singled up the middle and Harris followed with a home run over the center field fence to make it 2-0.Ā

The Bruins threatened to add to their lead in the second. The first two batters reached on a double and a single. Lewis & Clark turned a double play and then Pope recorded a strikeout to leave a runner at second.Ā

George Fox tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. With two down and a runner on second, Bethany Wilkes notched an RBI single to score Harris from second.Ā 
Ā 
Lewis & Clark put runners on in each of the first five innings against Ledendecker. They recorded multiple hits in the first and third and left runners in scoring position in three of the first four frames.Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pioneers enter the final doubleheader of the regular season needing one win to tie (20) and two wins (21) to set the program record for conference wins in a single-season. They also need one win (28) to tie the program record for win sin a single-season and two to set the program record for wins (29).Ā 
  • Marglin has now hit safely in the last six games and is hitting .579 (11-19) during that span.Ā 
  • With two games left in the NWC Regular-Season, the Pioneers and Bruins are tied for second with a 19-7 conference record. The two teams will face off in the first round of the NWC Tournament on Friday.Ā 
  • OzunaĀ tiedĀ the single-season program record for runs scored (38) in game one. She also posted 38 runs as a sophomore.Ā 
  • Gildersleeve is two bases away (two singles, one double etc.) from reaching 80 total bases in a season for the third time in her career. She finished with 83 as a first year and 80 last season.Ā 
WHO'S NEXTĀ 
Ā 
The Pioneers will look to wrap up the two seed on Sunday when they host George Fox for Senior Day. The Pioneers will honor their six seniors before the start of the contest.
