WOMEN'S PREVIEW
Â
The Pioneers have finished in the top-two in the Northwest Conference in each of the past two years, including winning their first-ever NWC Title in 2023. Last year, Lewis & Clark finished second to the University of Puget Sound. The WSquad's 2v8+ finished first out of three boats and the 1v8+ took second overall behind the Loggers. Prior to the Spring season starting, Lewis & Clark and Puget Sound were picked as the co-favorites in the NWC with two first-place votes apiece. Â
Â
First-year head coach
Charlotte Copp has moved around the team's lineups this Spring as the Pioneers look to build speed in their top two boats. Coop returned to her alma mater prior to the school year, after winning NWC Coach of the Year last Spring with Pacific University.Â
Â
The Pioneers have been limited to competing in three regattas this Spring.  Lewis & Clark faced off against their fellow Northwest Conference schools at the Pacific Lutheran Invite on March 8 and the Pio Invite on April 5. At the PLU Invite, the 1v8+ went head-to-head with Pacific Lutheran University and beat the Lutes by 1.5 seconds in a back-and-forth race. The varsity 8+ also raced against Puget Sound and finished second overall. The Pioneers 2v8+ raced twice and finished within 10 seconds of PLU in both races.Â
Â
Lewis & Clark put together their fastest times of the season at the Blue Heron Regatta in California. Both boats raced in a six-boat heat against DI and DII competition. The 1v8+ finished in a season-best 7:39.0 and the 2v8+ crossed the line in 8:02.0.Â
Â
Lewis & Clark's 2v8+ showed a massive improvement at the Pio Invite. They raced against PLU for the third time season and finished 17.7 seconds ahead of PLU in a head-to-head race. The team's 1v8+ finished in fourth place in their lone race behind Puget Sound, PLU and Pacific.Â
Â
The Pioneers 2v8+ enter the weekend as the second-ranked team in the West Region behind Pacific Lutheran. They are the favorites in the 2v8+ but Lewis & Clark will need to make up ground in the 1v8+ to have a chance to earn the NWC Title. The two varsity 8+ races will go off at 9:40 (1v8+) and 9:50 a.m. (2v8+).Â
Â
Lewis & Clark will race three fours in the second half of Saturday's regatta. The team will have a boat competing in the varsity 4+ B (11:00 a.m.) and varsity 4+ A (11:10) races and also a novice 4+ boat racing at 11:50 a.m.Â
Â
MEN'S PREVIEWÂ
Â
The men's team will look to continue to build towards the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship on Sunday, when they race against Puget Sound and the University of Oregon Club Team.
Â
Lewis & Clark will compete for the Rainier Cup at 9:30 a.m., when their varsity 8+ takes on Oregon in a head-to-head race. The Pioneers varsity 4+ will square off against a pair of Ducks boats at 10:50 a.m. In their final race of the regatta, the novice 4+ will go head-to-head with Puget Sound at 11:30 a.m.Â
Â
The varsity 4+ boat has been extremely competitive all Spring long. They will be racing against Oregon for the fourth time this season. Two of the races have been decided by five seconds or less, with the Pioneers finishing just 4.1 seconds back at the Covered Bridge Regatta on April 5. Lewis & Clark will look to turn the tide on Saturday and earn their first win of the year against Oregon.Â
Â
The team's 1v8+ and novice 4+ have only competed twice this Spring. The 1v8+ placed third at the PLU Invite and seventh at the Covered Bridge Regatta. The novice 4+ competed head-to-head against NCAA DII Western Washington University at the PLU Invite and placed fourth at the Covered Bridge Regatta against Oregon, Puget Sound and the University of California.Â
Â
WHAT'S NEXTÂ
Â
Both teams will travel to Sacramento next week for WIRA. Races are set for Saturday and Sunday.
