NEWBERG, Ore. — Lewis & Clark College women's tennis secured two singles wins, but George Fox University prevailed with a 5-2 victory in Northwest Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers were unable to build early momentum as the Bruins swept all three doubles matches to claim the opening point. Seniors
Kacie Lau and
Hayley Kreps dropped a 6-2 decision to Arianna Rader and Kalli Wiker at second doubles. In the first flight, junior
Susanna Anand and sophomore
Charlotte Makoni forced a tiebreaker but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-1) to Riley Bobkiewicz and Shanah Denham. In the third slot, sophomore
Emma Loucks and senior
Lauren Smith-Euben lost a tight 7-5 match to Cassey Hitch and Sophie Denham.
Lewis & Clark responded in singles play. Anand delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win over Bobkiewicz at the No. 1 position. At No. 3, Kreps won the final 10 games to secure a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Shanah Denham, giving the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
George Fox answered with wins in the remaining four singles matches, starting with Sophie Denham, who tied the match at 2-2 by defeating senior
Allison Gabelman 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth singles match. In the second flight, Makoni dropped a tightly contested match to Wiker, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), giving the Bruins a 3-2 advantage.
Juhree Kizziar clinched the team win for George Fox with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over first-year
Anna English at the No. 5 position. Lau closed out the day with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Hitch in the sixth spot.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Anand improved to 5-4 in NWC play and has now defeated Bobkiewicz twice this season.
- Kreps earned her fifth consecutive win, moving to 5-1 at the No. 3 singles position. Her only loss at that spot came in three sets against Shanah Denham in February.
- Lewis & Clark is half a match behind Whitworth for the fourth and final spot in the NWC postseason tournament. The Pioneers have three home matches remaining in the regular season, while the Pirates will play two at home and two on the road, including a final weekend matchup against the Pios at the L&C Tennis Dome.
