PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's soccer built their first multi-goal lead in program history and nearly earned their first conference tie of the season, on Friday night at Griswold Stadium.
THE BASICS
Whitman College 4, Lewis & Clark 2
(Lewis & Clark 0-8-1, Northwest Conference 0-5)
(Whitman 6-0-3, NWC 5-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior
Dylan Weinstein and first year
Raff Ladd scored on either side of halftime, but Whitman evened the score with two quick strikes and then added two goals in the final 85 seconds to defeat the Pioneers 4-2.
Weinstein scored for the second-straight game and extended his team-leading tally to three goals. Ladd's goal was the first of his career and was setup by senior
Aashir Walson.
Junior goalie
Micaiah Garan made five saves for Lewis & Clark to reach 50 saves on the season.
Whitman's leading scorer Lucas McAllister posted his team-leading sixth and seventh goals of the year. First year Remy Marcks scored the tying goal and added assists on each of the final two goals of the contest. Kevin Serrano recorded the fourth and final goal of the game for Whitman.
Lewis & Clark used a total team effort across the contest to nearly hand the league-leading Blues their first loss of the year. The back four of
Sam Gunderson,
Emmett Olson, Talen Heywood and
Aleister Alfstad all played the full 90 minutes. They helped contribute to most of the team's seven blocked shots and came through with numerous tackles and interventions.
Whitman started the game on the front foot for the first 20 minutes but the Pioneers defense stood tall and Garan came off his line to break up several chances.
Lewis & Clark began to find their footing over the next 10 minutes and Weinstein opened the scoring on the team's first shot on target of the game at 31:21. The junior's initial left-footed shot from outside the box was blocked, but he picked up the rebound and blasted a right-footed shot into the top netting before the Whitman keeper could react.
The Pioneers would keep that momentum going and limit Whitman to just two shots over the final 13+ minutes of the first half.
The home team made it 2-0 with their first shot on target of the second half. Whitman was whistled for a foul at midfield. Alfstad floated a free kick into the box that the Whitman keeper bobbled and couldn't hold on to. Walson was the first Pioneer to the ball and had his shot blocked, but Ladd collected the rebound amidst two defenders and poked the ball in for a 2-0 advantage at 47:16.
Whitman began to push bodies forward and had several corner kicks cleared away by Lewis & Clark. The Blues were given a path back into the game when Lewis & Clark was whistled for a foul in the box at 66:16. McAllister's initial penalty shot was saved by Garan but McAllister was the first player to the rebound and easily lofted a shot over Garan to make it 2-1.
The Blues tied the game at 69:23. Ellett Clum-Stockton lifted a pass to the far side of the box that found Marcks and the first year blasted a right-footed shot across the goal mouth to make it 2-2.
Lewis & Clark would refocus and from there and had a great chance to retake the lead in the 83
rd minute. Senior
Ishan Abraham was fouled just outside the box but Gunderson's free kick went just over the bar to keep the score at 2-2.
The Blues took the lead at 88:35. Off a throw in near midfield, Marcks found McAllister in space on the near side and the senior rifled a shot across the goal to give Whitman a 3-2 lead.
The visitors tacked on an insurance goal with 14 seconds to play. Marcks sent a cross to the center of the box and Serrano headed it home to put the game out of reach.
