Whitworth Sails Past Men's Soccer 4-0

PORTLAND, Ore.—Whitworth University scored three goals in the final 28 minutes to earn a 4-0 win over Lewis & Clark College men's soccer on Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENEDĀ

The Pioneers played the Pirates close for over 60 minutes and had a brilliant chance to tie the game just after the hour mark. Whitworth would pull away with a penalty kick goal in the 63rdĀ minute and Ralph Borromeo set up two goals in the final 18 minutes to account for the final scoreline.Ā

Junior goalie Micaiah Garan made five saves on nine shots in his ninth start of the season.Ā

Senior Ben Schwartz and first year Raff Ladd tied for the team lead with two shots apiece. Schwartz (two), sophomore Aleister Alfstad, Ladd and first year Oscar Hammond all posted a shot on target.Ā

Whitworth's leading scorer Dominic Gusman led the Pirates attack with a goal and an assist. Substitutes Johny Cortez, Lucas Diaz and Lucas Joehnk all scored for the visitors who earned their third-straight conference win.Ā

The visitors grabbed a 1-0 lead at 25:41, when Gusman led the Pirates on a counter attack and found Cortez for his second goal of the year.Ā

Lewis & Clark nearly tied the game just after the hour mark. Schwartz forced a save by Whitworth goalie Aiden Chase from inside the box. The rebound bounced out to HammondĀ Ā at the top of the box and he blasted a shot that forced a diving save from the Whitworth keeper.Ā

The Pirates responded with an insurance goal less than two minutes later. The Pioneers were whistled for a foul in the box and Gusman calmly slotted home his penalty kick to make it 2-0.Ā

Diaz stretched the visitors lead to 3-0 at 72:50 off a counter attack and a strong finish from distance. Whitworth capped off the scoring at 82:30 on Joehnk's first goal of the season.Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Whitworth outshot Lewis & Clark 17-8 and 9-5 on shots on target. After being outshot 10-2 in the first half, Lewis & Clark closed the gap to 7-6 in the second stanza.Ā 
  • 22 Pioneers saw action in the contest on Sunday. Hammond made his collegiate conference debut and posted one shot on goal in 18 minutes.Ā 
  • Sophomore Sam London made his return from an injury to play 32 minutes off the bench for the Pioneers.Ā 
  • Lewis & Clark posted a season-high five shots on goal during a conference game. They have posted at least eight shots in each of their past four games.Ā Ā
