Women’s Soccer Out Shoots Lions in Home Opener

Senior Celeste Schreifels scores Pioneers lone goal in 3-1 loss

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College women's soccer senior Celeste Schreifels scored in the second half of Sunday's home opener, but it wasn't enough as NAIA Multnomah University found the back of the net early in the game and left Griswold Stadium with a 3-1 non-conference win.

THE BASICS

Multnomah 3, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-1-1)
(Multnomah 2-2-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Schreifels recorded her 24th career goal in the 59th minute Sunday afternoon to move into a tie for the third-most career goals in program history. The fifth-year forward beat two defenders to face Multnomah keeper Jennifer Alvillar one-on-one and booted the ball from the right side of the penalty box to find the back of the net on the far post. Schreifels's goal pulled the Pioneers within one with just over 31 minutes left in the game.

Multnomah took control early in the first official meeting between the two squads, scoring two goals and attempting three other shots in the opening 15 minutes. The Lions' Ava Martins scored the day's first goal on a corner kick from Annika Rahf at 6:07. Rahf added a goal just over three minutes later when her near post shot sailed just over the fingertips of Pioneers' goalie Anna Ingadottir. Ingadottir, a junior starting her first home game in net, had just earned her first save of the game, blocking a shot by Paige Nguyen when Rahf picked up the rebound and gave Multnomah a 2-0 lead.

The momentum shifted when sophomore Grace Smith stepped in front of Nanea Moke-Rabang's shot, blocking the attempt.

Lewis & Clark's first effort at cutting the deficit came in the 17th minute as junior Megan Yanagi took a short pass from classmate Carli Driskill's corner kick. Yanagi's left foot cross hit off the crossbar and was picked up by senior Abby Hayes, whose shot sailed high. Over the next four minutes, Schreifels and Yanagi combined for three shots on target, and Alvillar stopped all of them.

Between the 30th and 35th minute, the Pioneers had three corner kicks and five shot attempts. Sophomore transfer Iris Stutzman recorded two attempts, with one on target in her home debut during the stretch. First-year Siena Flock, who scored in Lewis & Clark's exhibition game against Chaminade University last week, had a header off a corner kick blocked, picked up the rebound, and saw her second attempt blocked in the 34th minute.

Multnomah's Moke-Rabang drew a foul in the box just before halftime. Her penalty kick bounced off the middle of the crossbar, and her teammate Sydney Holmes connected on the rebound, but Ingadottir was there to grab the ball for her second save.

After halftime, the Pioneers became the aggressors on offense, with Yanagi, Flock, and Stutzman all registering shots on target before Schreifels pulled the home team within a goal.

After Nguyen added an insurance score for Multnomah in the 66th minute, Schreifels and Smith had two shots on goal in an attempt to get back in the game. Smith's near post header off a corner kick in the 76th minute was within inches of scoring, but Alvillar fell on top of the ball right before it crossed the goal line.

  • Flock and fellow first-year Ava Lazzara earned starting spots in their home debut, with Lazzara playing the full 90 and Flock finishing with four shots, one on target.
