Box Score 3 VANCOUVER, Wash.—Junior
Susanna Anand won four singles matches in the "A" Singles Main Draw at the 2024 Northwest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament and became the first Lewis & Clark College women's tennis player to advance to the finals of a regional tournament since 2016 to lead the Pioneers at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Eight Pioneers earned at least one main draw win in singles, and six had multiple wins in their main draws as women's tennis amassed 22 total wins in singles matches over the three-day tournament.
A SINGLES RECAP
Sophomore
Maya Curry and senior
Allison Gabelman joined Anand in the "A" Singles Main Draw for the Pioneers. Curry, a transfer in her first season at Lewis & Clark, drew Whitman College's Erica Mock in the first round. The Blues senior finished with an 8-2 singles record a year ago and handed Curry her first collegiate loss 6-2, 6-2.
Gabelman defeated George Fox University's Ari Rader 7-6 (1), 6-4 in the first round before falling to the tournament's number two seed, Whitman's Teleya Blunt, 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16.
Anand entered the ITAs with the number four seed and easily defeated Abigail Bond of George Fox 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. In the round of 16, the Pioneers' number one player defeated Pacific University's Chloe Takahashi 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3.
Sunday in the semi-finals, Anand faced off against #2-seeded Blunt. Anand was down four games to one in the first set and fought back to a 5-5 tie. She then forced a first-set tiebreaker and won 7-3.
Blunt jumped out early in the second set again, going up 3-2. Anand earned a place in the championship match by coming back to win 7-5. It was the first win for the junior over Blunt after dropping a close three-set match to the Blues' player last spring.
In the championship match, Anand faced number one seed Cassidy Binder of Pacific but lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. It was the first time a Pioneer had been in the finals of the "A" Singles Main Draw since 2016, when Wiktoria Plawksa won the tournament.
B SINGLES RECAP

First-year
Anna English made her collegiate debut in the round of 64 and defeated Zoe Hughes of the University of Puget Sound 6-1, 6-1. English earned her second win, 5-7, 6-1, 10-4, against Morgan Wagoner from Pacific, before falling to the bracket's number four seed Cassey Hitch of George Fox in three sets (2-6, 6-1, 6-2) in the round of 16.
Garcia and Vianzon played their first collegiate matches in the round of 32. Garcia drew the "B" Draws #1 seed Jules Thompson of Whitman and fell 6-2, 6-0.
Vianzon defeated Puget Sound's Ginger Parker 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 32. The first-year faced Pacific's Valentina Casab-Klescova, who entered the tournament ranked #5-8 in the round of 16. Vianzon fell in straight sets to Casab-Klescova, who went on to when the "B" Singles Main Draw Championship.
Makoni and Lau each advanced to the quarter-finals of the "B" Main Draw. Makoni defeated Whitman's Hannah Wells 6-1, 6-2 and Willamette University's Marie Tarrab 6-1, 6-0 before falling in the quarters.
In the second round, Lau earned a three-set win over Whitworth University's Libertad Sarmiento (4-6, 6-3, 10-7). The senior then defeated #9-12 seed Kaylah Tan from Whitman 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 16 before failing to Hitch in the quarters.
Kreps defeated Puget Sound's Ella Parker 6-2, 6-1 on Friday, then lost a close three-set match to Olivia Corbet of Whitworth on Saturday in the round of 16.
Vianzon, English and Kreps all qualified for the "B" Draw 3rd Round Singles Consolation Bracket, and all three earned wins to advance to the semi-finals. Vianzon defeated Whitman's Piper Rylander 6-2, 2-6, 11-9. English defeated Tan 6-1, 6-2, and Kreps won 6-2, 6-2 over Sundi King of Linfield University to set up an all Lewis & Clark semi-final.
Kreps defeated English 6-3, 6-2 to move on to the bracket championship match. Vianzon fell 7-5, 6-1 to George Fox's Juhree Kizziar in the other semi-final. In a close "B" Draw 3
rd Round Singles Consolation Championship Match, Kreps lost 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-8.
DOUBLES RECAP
Anand and Makoni earned a #5-8 seed in the Doubles Main Draw and joined Gabelman and Vianzon as the two Lewis & Clark duos to earn a win in the main draw. Anand and Makoni defeated Chatham and Buck from Puget Sound 8-0, while Gabelman and Vianzon defeated O'Steen and Tarrab from Willamette 8-1.
Kreps and Smith Euben won two matches in the Doubles Consolation bracket to advance to the semi-finals. They defeated Willamette's Spence and Sola 8-4, and Puget Sound's Chatham and Buck 8-4. The Pioneers fell to the Doubles Consolation Champions, Richelle Suzuki and Eva Lief from Willamette 8-7 (7) in the semi-finals.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kreps led the team with six total wins on the weekend and a 6-4 record.
