Loggers Hold Off Late Women's Soccer Comeback

Delaney Jones made a career-high seven saves

PORTLAND, Ore.—Despite first year Sophia Gill's goal in the final 10 minutes, Lewis & Clark College women's soccer's comeback effort fell short on Sunday afternoon against visiting University of Puget Sound.Ā
Ā
THE BASICS
Ā
Puget Sound 2, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 3-3-1, Northwest Conference 1-2)Ā
(Puget Sound 2-4-2, Northwest Conference 2-1-1)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Puget Sound scored twice in the opening half and controlled the game until the Pioneers put together a late push in the final 15 minutes. Gill cut the deficit in half at 82:57 when she jumped up to head a Grace Smith corner kick and the ball ended up going off of her back and just inside the post for her first collegiate home goal.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark kept the pressure on the Loggers as they aimed for an equalizer. The Pioneers made several forays into the attacking half and drew two free kicks but the Loggers kept them from getting a shot off to secure the win.Ā
Ā
Junior goalie Delaney Jones posted a career-high seven saves. Jones made five of their seven stops in the first half to keep the team in the game.Ā
Ā
Puget Sound, who had been off since Wednesday, came out on the front foot and used their speed to create a bevy of chances. The visitors took the lead at 14:56 when Zoe Fowler connected with a cross from Kya Scott for a goal from 10-yards out.Ā
Ā
The Loggers added a second tally at 39:25. Zoe Winkler's initial shot was blocked but she pounced on the rebound and slid a low shot just inside the post to make it 2-0. For the second-straight day, Lewis & Clark's defense would make adjustments at halftime and they kept the Loggers off the board in the second half.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark's best chance to score in the first half came in the first 25 minutes. Kate Meinhard beat everyone to the ball on a corner kick but her line drive header went right at Puget Sound goalie Gianna Maldonado at 16:58.Ā

The Pioneers managed just two shots in the second half but both played a part in their one goal. Sophomore Iris Stutzman, whose speed on the wings caused the Loggers problem all game long, raced towards net and unleashed a low, hard shot that Maldonado was able to slow but the rebound went over the goal line for a corner kick. Smith sent a floating ball towards the back post on the ensuing corner kick and Gill rose up over several players to redirect it.Ā
Ā
BY THE NUMBERS
  • For the fourth-straight game, Lewis & Clark's defense did not allow a goal in the second half. The Pioneers have allowed just two goals in the second half this season in 315 minutes.Ā
  • Puget Sound finished with a 24-5 edge in shots and 9-4 lead in shots on goal.Ā
  • Smith has now posted an assist in back-to-back games and three of the past four contests. She sits first on the team in assist (three) and second in points (five).Ā
  • Gill made the most of her minutes on Sunday. She scored her second career goal in just 11 minutes, in what was just her second collegiate conference game. Gill ranks second on the team with two goals in just 122 minutes.Ā
  • Jones has now posted a new career-high in saves in back-to-back-games. Jones is 3-2 this year with one shutout and 24 saves in five starts.
WHO'S NEXTĀ
Ā
Lewis & Clark will conclude their three-game homestand on Wednesday night, when they host Linfield University at 7:45 p.m. The Pioneers swept the Wildcats (2-0 and 1-0) last season for the first time since returning to varsity status in 2004.Ā
